I\'m hopeless.

I spoke to the current custodian of my potential 4th boat, and have liaised with the transport man.

Were going to do a recconaisance on Sunday to check he can lift and move her.

Bert (great chap) says I can put her on his farm.

What on earth I think I'm doing with 4 boats remains to be understood.

A long hard assessment of reality is needed.

At least I can be sure that she wont be cut up.

Hmm. This is dangerously akin to someone who - purely hypothetically, you understand - can't walk past the Chandlery without going on a spending spree. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Surely you can't bear to sell Playtime?

Re: I\'m hopeless.

A man after my own heart......

I still have a garage full of old rusty classic car bits that I can't bear to thrown away, even though the car went 5 years ago.... and have had several other cars in the mean time... in fact thinking about it, i've got rusty classic car bits from several different cars.....

You are not alone.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

Classic cars, eh? My finest was a Jensen Interceptor Mk III - utterly knackered, yet another stupid purchase, but it was fun for a while. However, on my way to the pub to use the internet this evening, I walked past Woodbridge Station and what did I see in the car park?

An Aston Martin DB5 Volante. If I remember correctly, there are something like 180 of these in the country. Too dark to take a picture on the useless mobile camera, but I fawned a good deal. I have always wanted precisely this car, in Dubonnet Red with a cream interior. It is worth something like three times the purchase value of my boat.

Greenly,

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

A slight drift 6 weeks ago I bought a 1968 (tax exempt) Ford D series 7 1/2 toner to make into a transporter for Mercia III. (she is on a yard /launch trolley) in my back garden.
The theory is it will be cheaper than paying to have her transported by a Carrier it worked out to over £1500 to take her to Liverpool 60mls drop/hang her in the water and return to Cheshire. If the lot costs that amount with the fitting of ramps etc the next trip is just the cost fuel, insurance and MOT and if we reg it as a recovery vehicle thats not required.
Just to come back on thread I run a 21 year old Audi Quattro and as yet have no intention to change her for something new. (no gizmo's chips or computer on board). Just sheer get up and go.

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

'Tis not so daft; The owner of the Itchen Ferry cutter "Tom Tit" has bought his own low-loader and Volvo prime mover. Both he and his wife are licensed to drive the outfit, so they can take their boat to European rallies the easy way.
Peter.

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

I have a 1971 16 ton Ford D series which I have restored so if you need any info on sourcing spares / manuals etc. send me an email.

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

Hi John.
Thank you for your kind offer. I do have a 1978 D 0710 as well it's a horse box. I have the W/S manuals and parts list plus ops manuals so I am well sorted on that score. I managed to pick up a crate of spare bits off ebay and the 68 D was ebay as well. I am at the moment converting the old pull out dash hand brake to the toggle lever air-op one.
A small bit that would improve things is the stand up faring that encases the air-op lever. My thoughts are to make a glass mold from the one in the 78 horse box and then make a fibre glass one from the pattern. If you know of anywhere I could buy this bit I would be grateful, it would avoid having to make one and having leads to sourcing spares is always a idea.
I have looked at your Yacht and she is a credit to you I wish you many happy hrs on the water with her.
Have a look at my Mercia III. here
Cheers David.

Fraid it does require an MOT. Only recovery vehicles which can raise one end of a broken down vehicle (ie cranes or spectacle lifts) are MOT exempt. If you raise the whole broken down vehicle then MOT ( actually plating and testing as it's over 3500kg GVM) is required.
Another thing is that if it isn't a broken down vehicle then Plods will pull you.

I run a fleet of recovery vehicles of both types and have run-ins with the polis about what I can and can't do with them. So far I have known MUCH more than them about it.

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

Thanks Duncan.
I have had my doubts about that, but It was a technical adviser at Swansea VOSA office that suggested it may be an option, but he did say we will find out if that is an option when we present it for a change to the V5 and re-plate and MOT it.
I see you are up on the Clyde. This is one of the places we hope to get to as Mercia III has been there in 1913 en-rout the Humber to Dublin.
The transporter is to enable us to go up to some where like the Clyde and if we feel a sea return is not on we can nip with the waggon and bring her back home.

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

David,

There is a way you might be able to do it.

If the trailer looks like a pukka trailer but has a problem ( like something on it has failed) then it is possible to argue that you are recovering the trailer and that the boat just happens to be on it. Erm..... I know people who have successfully done this...!
Don't mention to VOSA what you are going to do.
You may have problems getting insurance for it as a recovery vehicle.
Keep me posted please
cheers

Re: Non-maritime rarity in Woodbridge

It's insurance is for a historical occasional use (1500mls per year) truck to transport an 1905 30ft wooden boat with "Footman James" Very reasonable to at £77.
The recovery bit was a side line by the man at Swansea when I said we wanted to make it like a drive up on recovery vehicle with a boat on it. He asked if we would be recovering the boat. I said well we will be recovering the boat from the water thats when he made the suggestion.
But it is not a big issue I have on Qualms in having it MOTed each year as I do that with the horse box.
It was just the appeal of the no MOT fee.
