I\'m bored tonight, so I wondered

what would be a good Christmas present to buy for HWMBO. I want a watermaker, good for ones hair, washing, drinking etc. But Richard doesn't have an awful lot of hair. What other thing would be good to get a man who loves gadgets, but owns most of them already? Needs to be boaty, he is totally focused on his sailing.

As your long term aim is to go blue water sailing I would concentrate on that. How much do you want to spend? At the cheap end - books. At the expensive end the sky's the limit. Have you considered sending him on a course?

send him on a diving course (BSAC or PADI). very compatible with the blue water ambition, and then there will be lots of toys he will want!

He is already a fully qualified diving instructor, but a saugage maker? Not seen one of those. Otherwise, great ideas guys.A gin maker seems good, but don't you need loads of potato's? Or whatever you make gin from. Also have Jimmy Cornel's books already.
Any more good ideas.
SWMBO's should read this to get ideas for you people!!

Ocean Passages for the World, NP136. Wonderful book. Includes fold-out pack of world charts showing routes, currents and winter & summer climatic charts.

Great starting point for any armchair passage planning. My 1973 3rd edition is a bit dog eared now, but then so's my armchair.

Here is somebody else's idea of a perfect Christmas gift. Can't say I agree, but there are other suggestions too. Not far too far from you either, IIRC.

I can't be bothered with a footnote - it's usually rubbish anyway.

I second that. Mines an 1987 edition but I don't suppose it changes that much.

Thats where you are wrong. There is a new edition out that has been "improved" The fold out charts are much smaller! I shant be buying it, but will get A3 print out of the same charts from here

Brilliant, Jimi, I wouldn't have believed it possible. And since he already has a breadmaker and a rice cooker, this will be ideal!!
Thank you to one and all, this has been a very helpful thread.

Re: I\'m bored tonight, so I wondered

A colleague of mine bought her husband a sextant for a landmark birthday (they plan to sail off in a couple of years' time) and wanted to find a way of giving him some training in its use - but not the usual dry classroom stuff.

I slightly flippantly suggested giving Tom Cunliffe a ring, which she did, and they spent a great weekend with him on Westernman, learning to use the sextant and doing some sailing into the bargain. A good time was had by all.

Not that cheap, I suspect, but great for a special occasion.
