The clocks change on Sunday so I plan to get a final 2012 Friday afternoon trip in by nipping down to Kelmscott for an overnight mooring. If anybody else arrives by boat I'll buy you a pint in the Plough. Offer only open to one person per boat and for the first ten boats only. My wallet should be safe.

Anybody else afloat this weekend?

As tempting as that sounds I am stopping here for the weekend, having completed an epic journey from Chertsey to Oxford this week (including a pause for a day and a half waiting for Reds to turn Yellow) I dont feel like going any further this week!

Need to get my tape measure out to see if I am going to get under the bridge as well now!

Glad you got there in the end. More pics of your new boat please.

I've got to congratulate you on making that journey, you certainly weren't helped by the conditions. You deserve a bit more than a pint in my book :)

If you managed to scrape that floating boudoir of yours under Osney bridge I'd buy you a pinacolada with sparklers - or what ever it is you most like :-)

H,mm wonder how much it would cost to hire crane to get it "OVER" the bridge.................might be worth it just to rock up demand that beer !

"buy you at pint at Kelmscott"; wasn't that an episode title of "Boogie up the River" as narrated by Timothy Spall on Radio 4 a few years ago?

Lovely pub & village. We used to take six domestic dustbins with us to fill and get SA under Osney Bridge, move all the ballast to the cockpit and flood the bilges.

It is a lovely village. The man who owns the local boat crane business drinks at the Plough. Nice chap.

What an offer...wish we could join you but we are sadly boatless at the moment!

We did however spend a couple of nights up at The Plough a year ago (they have a dog friendly room) as we were interested to see the bits of river we'd yet to navigate. It's a really friendly place and the food wasn't half bad either!

Cold

Am here at the Plough. The lock keeper at Buscot said 'You're not sleeping on that tonight are you?' Git :-)

Note to boaters - phone signal is V flakey but they have free, fast wi-fi. It enables the posting of this pic, (note how busy this free mooring is):

Edited to add, yes, that is Moxon looking so lovely in the dusk.

Phone signal (vodafone and T mobile) is fine at the riverbank.

Back on the boat for 19:00 - mostly because concrned about having too many pints at the Plough and then slipping off a frosty boat to death.

New Origa stove sent the Carbon Monoxide alarm mad in the cabin - so ideas of using it as a cheeky heater are dashed. Worked fine from the 'above' (is that the cockpit?) to heat a tin of something.

Since posting the earlier picture another boat has arrived. I hope not to claim thier pint, (becuse I'm here). I have 1 tin of 'the full monty breakfast' and 1 pot of 'oats so simple' breakfast - if you fancy breakfast neighbour :-)

I think a good percentage of forumites might be a tad envious of you Moxon. You seem to have a passion for your boat and the river. And that mooring looks idyllic. I'll be down at the big marina tomorrow, hoping the twin engines start ok, that the heating works, and the bilge pump is fixed, the heated towel rail warms the shower room for shwmbo and that the next big bill won't be a big as the last...
Oh, for a pint at the Plough and sitting by a field and not being caught up in all the bo***cks that we call progress ;)

Nice post Cashbuyer :-) It was bloddy cold last night - snug in the sleeping bag but I wasn't brave enough to get out of it until 08:00 when the sun started to melt some of the ice outside. Still sleep better on the boat than on the expensive mattress at home though.

Be assured if I could afford a boat with a heated towel rail I'd love one. But Moxon would never be replaced - just joined one day perhaps. But I'd probably have to get the Mirror dingy out of the back garden before discussing a new boat purchase with SWMBO.

The light and autumnal colours were amazing this morning and I wish I'd taken a proper camera. But these taken on the phone might give an idea:

Near Kelmscott at about 09:00

I'm a bit in love with Orca, (don't tell Moxon):

There were about 40 geese at one point on the river. Some of them had large Orange 'rings' on their necks which might be visible in the picture. Why not just ring their legs? Didn't get a good picture because another boat was coming and I had to steer. Today is crane out day for softies so there were a few boats moving.

There's loads of pillboxes around here but this one looks like it's going to fall in the river before long. I don't think it can have been built hanging off the bank so I guess illustrates the effects of bank side erosion, (ahem - not caused by boats of course). Lechlade church spire in background:

Ha'Penny bridge at Lechlade. So called because it used to cost that to cross it - until the locals revolted.

The best bit was that I didn't have to tackle either of the two locks alone. That experience is yet to come...

I have to agree about Orca. Walk past her at least twice a week whilst walking the dog. Always stop and have a sneaky look. Something about her. I bet her history is pretty interesting.
