ignition query

Hi all
My son has just purchased a 21ft launch, with twin perkins inboard diesels.
My problem is when you connect the battery live and negative the starter motor turns over and does not engage. this is without the ignition key in and the ignition is off. anyone any idea's please.

Sounds like the solenoid is stuck in the make contact position, try tapping it with a small hammer to free the contacts off, or take the motor off and strip it down to free off the solenoid.
