Go on you know you want to answer this one ........ /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Great ..... so far .

Seems to be following roughly what I expected .....

so here goes on another Poll to take it along a bit further .....

Re: If you\'ve had your anchor for years ...... do you ?

Objection M'lud. Counsel for the prosecution is leading the witness(es).

Objection ??

Why ?

My beliefs and previous posts etc. are not evident here and all poll possibilities are as fair as can be surely ?? No double meanings etc.

Objection overruled

Re: Great ..... so far .

I'm surprised you didn't include the Danforth (and Fortress) - still one of the more prevalent anchors seen on boats and, I predict, will stay so.

Forgotten ones ....

I do apologise for missing out Danforth etc. - once the poll was up - I started to remember other makes as well.

The whole idea was to add to the "other debate" actually .... as we all tend to read threads and our minds do tricks .... we may take notion that a certain item is more prevalent than another .... but in fact it is the post that creates that illusion. So a poll to see where people stand .... I applaud Ships cat pie charts etc. - but isn't that "bleeding off" from YBW .... an act I was unfairly accused of recently ?

I have added onto the original poll other aspects .... the whole point to gain a view of the boating world in general. Maybe a later chart or conclusion of findings ? But lets see if it runs it's course .... It is not a troll - but a genuine thread to see just what is the sq. (albeit with some ommissions .....)

Re: Forgotten ones ....

we know you aren't a troll............

I was surprised that you hadn;t included danforth, brittany (supplied on many Jeneau boats esp power), or spade and deriavites.

I also struggle to see how you delination of chain length makes any sense - I have 17m 8mm chain and in most anchorages am pretty much all chain (I draw 0.8m) however I have 300m 14mm octoplait attached to it so I answered appropriate to that ie short chain length.
overall the previous one was better - a duplication would have been interesting to see how things had moved on..........

Re: Forgotten ones ....

It would be a brave man who claimed to have included every anchor design! Cruising in France for the past three years we have seen many new types, seemingly introduced by the French yachting industry on a regular basis. Apart from the quirky looking Brake, there is a Delta copy by FOB that is now fitted on many new French boats, Kobra, Soc, Guardian, Sword: the list goes on. And that's ignoring the many Danforth/Britany copies.

Re: Forgotten ones ....

I've seen plastic delta's .... alloy jobs .... what about the "Flying Anchor" ......

To put in most available would create a poll list so long as to be unmanageable .... I kept to what I felt was obvious types ... but made error of leaving out Danforth etc. - Sorry.

I take Duncans point about length of chain and rope .... but you do go out into Channel and anchor in deeper water than most ... like many on here we tend to think in terms of coastal / close to shore boaters and poll / post in that line ....

Still - the polls are looking interesting and I'm sure some posters who promote anchors / have definite thoughts etc. are looking them over ..... Great ... the world only moves on by debate and evolution ....

I admit that my Plough copy does the job .... my weighty Fisherman supplies my spare needs ... I have no intention of emptying my wallet to a chandler for another ... but that does notr mean I cannot appreciate others views / experiences etc.

If anyone wants to add their poll (please keep in same style or vein .... ) to this thread - possibly to correct my ommissions ?? Or to add that makes even morte valuable the info gleaned .... please go ahead...

Chain length

Length of chain carried is surely dependent upon your cruising area? I carried 50 metres for many years annd it was always sufficient in North Wales and Holland. I don't remember many times when the last 10 metres went out. Now in the Med we are regularly anchoring in 15 - 20 metres, partly due to anchorages being packed with small boat moorings. I have just ordered 60 metres to replace my old chain that had been joined several times.

dog? cat? I guess an easy mistake...

I don't understand about bleeding off YBW. 208 people were happy to answer my poll which as you can see I took the results and made them available. It help(s) those questions from new boaters about which anchor to carry, or which set up. Ask 5 boaters and get 5 answers, this way it gives an interesting overview of anchors and gear on British sailing vessels (I requested at the time that Mobo'ers do not join in as I was looking for smaller sailboat type rigs).

If you look around harbours in the UK it is easy to see that the results do represent what is happening still. Though I may suggest that Delta may be getting a bigger share.

bleeding off ybw, I am still struggling with this, do you suggest I remove the results from my site? Am I in some way infringing copyright? I wrote the poll on a public forum and shared the results with the participants, what is wrong with this?

[/ QUOTE ]Nothing as far as I can see. What does 'bleeding' means in this context - don't worry about it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's a dog's life, eh? Had it every occurred to you that an anchor chain forms a catenary y=cosh(x)? Not fair, is it? Over to the other fellow.

Re: Chain length

Sailing in the Ionian on previosly a 9.5 m ( 5300kg ) and now 8.5m (3500KG). Main Bower 13kg CQR +60m 8mm chain with 50m octoplait 14mm rode as spare + spare 12kg Brittany with 20m chain + 50m 16mm 3strand Nylon.
Kedge 8kg bruce with5metre 8mm chain and 40m of 12mm octoplait.spare danforth 10kg and 50m 12mm octoplait.
+ 3x30 m 14mm 3strand nylon shore lines. and a 20kg old weighbridge weight sits in the bilge ,as a last resort.

My post wasn\'t meant to be a strike at you ...

And I apologise about the wrong ID ... for some reason I had impression that Ships_Cat had something to do with it !!!! Dunno why !!

Not so long ago - I was accused of using YBW and pulling data / people away to "my site" ... an accusation that was unfair and been proven so. Mine have proven complimentary to YBW.

I was commenting only that using a poll on YBW - albeit your own - then publishing on your site seems a bit like - I was accused of trying to do. For me - no matter .... and if you presented results as such on YBW - the date system would soon push it into background .... Using it own site has kept it available.

My poll is just that ... to look at present day and get some idea from boaters on here .... I and many others are not aware of and in fact often do not want to search on others sites for something that is good fodder on here.

If you think I have wronged you in my comment - sorry ... but it is my opinion .... which you and I have had differences over before ...no problem - as now.

My motives ? As you rightly say also - definite types prevail ... whether by virtue of being already on boat when bought - or by owner having trusted that proven design. We read many posts about new designs and lighter weight, ease of handling etc.. The number of posts asking what weight, type should a boat carry etc. They repeat previous threads ... but that is life and I for one do not think it bad ... it is a subject that should stay out in front ... If anothert anchors close to my boat .... I would like to be comfortable that he knows what he's doing and has good gear etc. Having on occasion decided to pick up and move when seeing another boat and way they anchor / what gear they use ....

A factor that often gets overlooked is the mixing of systems ..... many due to Club chat etc. know about mixing boat types on swinging moorings .... you can easily have clashes between lift keels and bilge keels etc. when tide ebbs etc.
You can have situations also with anchoring .... eg - my boat laying to all chain rode will be damped significantly by rode weight etc. - Another boat anchors neraby to rope / chain combo ..... he is not similarly damped and during gusts / current effects etc. can swing differently to my boat and be a liability in a crowded close anchoring situation to me ... of course my system is liability to him ...

When anchoring - I always try to have a look at boats around intended anchoring point ... try to see what is hanging of their bow before I commit .... a mobo with a light rope stretched taut from a bow is a definitely no-no for me and often seen ... let other mobo's with similar take up space near him.

How many times have you been quietly sitting at anchor and another boat arrives ... seemingly anchoring in good order - but mis-judges the drop position and ends up a bit closer than comfort after slacking away his rode ....

Yeh Yeh - I know I've drifted of on my own thread .... but it's my thread and I feel I can do that !!

Dog Watch - no insult intended alright ....

Re: My post wasn\'t meant to be a strike at you ...

Don't let's take ourselves too seriously /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: My post wasn\'t meant to be a strike at you ...

What might also be worth polling is something along the lines of:

If you had the same boat, but no anchors, would you still choose the anchors you have, or something different? If so what would you consider (assuming your local chandler stocked more types)?

I for one would choose a different combination, but as you say can you justify new ones as replacements when the new ones are largely untested in the UK.

Also: Do you anchor in demanding circumstances, or in relatively easy anchorages with good holding when a rock on a pice of rope would hold?

Re: Objection ??

Why leading?

1. Putting quotes around a terms like upgrade and new designs, sneers at them, so to speak.

2. Use of emotive terms like "swayed" (for influenced) and "anchor trolls" (for anchor threads) implies that the questioner doesn't approve of them.

3. Exclusion of other options - even "none of the above" would do.

Mind you, if the bias in questionnaires was always as obvious as this, we wouldn't wonder why pollsters so often get the answers they're looking for.

Re: Objection ??

You do an injustice sir .... the "" marks etc. are for the word NOT the implied as you perceive .....

Each possibility, each question was put as I thought as unbiased as possible - as it's well known by regulars that I am biased in my choice of anchoring ... That I tried to keep out of the polls as much as possible.

Amazing the power of the human thought !!
