If you're going to play the flag game, then please do it properly

Hee Hee.....

I'm safe from that one..... as are you..... the great tradition of being lashed to the ships wheel before aforementioned flogging falls down somewhat on our 'umble craft....

Are skippers just using them as decorative rags?

You bet... Lots of flags make my boat look a lot prettier - really nice... I have lots and stick them up all over the boat whenever possible.. Why not?

When I purchase my vessel, flag ettiquette will be in the opening pages of the ships standing orders and I shall have to suffer howls or pee taking from all who sail in her. When they claim that I am an anally retentive ponse who never quite got over his naval career being cut short I shall have to blush and confess that they are right.

Re: It\'s only a bit of cloth!

Mine has raised letters that look a bit like they are made of Kevlar and have a Saltire with Ecosse written underneath it.
I think it looks really nice and brings a spring into the step of the ageing Rover. (The car, not its driver)

I am told that certain coms oppos used to make a point of including cheeky signals when dressing ship.

There is not a correct order.

Yes there is. It's:

E, Q, p3, G, p8, Z, p4, W, p6, P, p1, I, Code, T, Y ,B, X, 1st Sub, H, 3rd Sub, D, F, 2nd Sub, U, A, O, M, R, p2, J, p0, N, p9, K, p7, V, p5, L, C, S.

The reason for this order is that it doesn't display a signal. Hoisting flags in any other order could possibly result in a signal being displayed.
This is why I chose the subject line "If you're going to play the flag game... etc."
Anyone stringing up flags all over their boat in the wrong order, is playing the game but it's obvious that they don't know the rules.
Believe it or not, if you know the dressing overall rules it's very easy to spot someone who is just pretending and they single themselves out as clueless. Whether or not the flag game is important is, of course, a different debate.

Re: If you\'re going to play the flag game, then please do it properly

Well so far as I am aware, the RN do it randomly and that's good enough for me.

All though an entirely accidental signal about wake, noise or some such could, I suppose, be most unfortunate.

The RN don't do anything randomly.

Re: If you\'re going to play the flag game, then please do it properly

If asked the RN will advise an acceptable order, but as I understand it any order that doesn't represent a signal is OK

My burgee is looking a bit battle worn as it stays up all summer, is this wrong?

Leaving it up means I can't forget it when flying my lovely posh defaced ensign.
