if you med boaters miss boating in the UK

You do know the Alhambra is up a mountain next door to a ski resort don't you? Or didn't the Thompson rep tell you when you booked your holiday? :D

Oi do you mind it was a 18 to 30..... ish !
Average weather temperature in Malaga in December: 12.65 ºC

The Alhambra is in Granada, not Malaga. Where I live the average maximum daytime temperatures in Autumn/Winter are:

November 20c
December 18c
January 17c
February 18c

We get an average of 300 sunny days a year. Obviously in the winter we do get cloudy and rainy days when the temperature drops, but the flipside are the sunny windless days in January where we will have temperatures in the low 20s.

In the UK there is normally a pattern of rain, rain, rain, cloud, rain, sun, cloud, rain.

Here the pattern is sun, sun, sun, sun, rain, sun, sun, sun, which I admit does get boring in the end. :D

However today it is raining and the outside temperature is 19c, but the lawn does need the water.

Price of tomatoes up

This must somewhere else then ? :)

Severe Weather News from the Mediterranean

19th May 2011 - Iberian inundation
Heavy rain and thunderstorms triggered flash flooding near the city of Cordoba, Andalucia,, forcing the evacuation of 150 homes in the villages of Villa Del Rio and Canete de la Torres. A low pressure system that developed over the Atlantic on Wednesday, moved eastwards across the region bringing torrential rain to southern Spain. Grazalema, Andalucia saw 33mm of rainfall in just 3 hours and Don Mencia received 44mm in 12 hours. One elderly woman was killed as she was washed away by the water, her body was found in a stream in the town. Water levels rose to nearly 2m in some properties.

Portugal was also affected by the low pressure system with Faro receiving 80mm of rain in just 12 hours during Wednesday which caused chaos. Air traffic was suspended at Faro airport for approximately one hour and a dam burst flooding important link roads between villages in the municipality of Arraiolos.

In February last year, at least 1500 people were forced to leave their homes in Andalucia after heavy rains caused the Gudalquivir River to burst its banks in Cordoba, causing major flooding across the province. Again in August of 2010, three people were killed in sudden torrential rain that caused flash flooding just south of Cordoba.

As a result of this increase in severe rainfall events the price of tomatoes has been pushed up by 61% and it is believed that they could get even more expensive if wet conditions across southern Spain continue. The reason for the price hike is because the rain is delaying planting and so crops have been reduced by 35% in Andalucia and 22% in Extremadura. The heavy rain also waterlogged many hectares of agricultural land in Portugal damaging crops of melons, peppers, potatoes and carrots. If the wet conditions continue, then it is feared that prices could continue to rise.

Ok, old git if it makes you feel better, the weather here is terrible all the time. What's more the booze is twice the price it is in the UK and fags are even more expensive. Even worse it's against the law for woman to sunbathe topless here. Don't know why I live here. ;)

I really do love Spain far better than the fur coat no nickers of poncy Italy.
Have been a regular visitor since early 1980s and fully aware of the attractions of the area.
We last stayed in Competa which presumably is in your neck of the woods ?

Now, what has Italy to see with what is being discussed?
Anyway, I guess that some skin deep beauty is still better than none at all... :D

Ellesar asked about coding. I think it could be done without coding either of the swapped boats, at least so far as UK law and UK flagged boats are concerned. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has other views on this

The relevant law is pasted below in italics. The two requirements for not needing to code are (i) that the boat swappers are friends and (ii) no money changes hands so as to create a profit element (but it is ok for running costs money to be paid)

Regarding (i), the use of a "friends" condition in UK law is very rare. I cannot think of another example. I think that if both swappers say they are friends, no court can find otherwise. It would be important I think for them to meet personally before the boat swap, ie on the morning of the first handover, but that's easy to do.

Regarding (ii), in UK law "money" is different from and much narrower than "money's worth" or "consideration", both of which terms appear often in UK law. "Money" means just money and not any other type of value. In a boat (straight) swap no money changes hands

In conclusion then I think all this can be done without needing to code the boats.

Merchant Shipping (Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport or Pleasure) Regulations 1998, SI 1998 No. 2771, as amended:
[JFM note: In order not to need to be coded, a vessel must on the voyage concerned be a pleasure vessel]
"Pleasure vessel" means any vessel which at the time it is being used is:
(i)
(aa) in the case of a vessel wholly owned by an individual or individuals, used only for the sport or pleasure of the owner or the immediate family or friends of the owner; or

(bb) in the case of a vessel owned by a body corporate, used only for sport or pleasure and on which the persons on board are employees or officers of the body corporate, or their immediate family or friends; and

(ii) on a voyage or excursion which is one for which the owner does not receive money for or in connection with operating the vessel or carrying any person, other than as a contribution to the direct expenses of the operation of the vessel incurred during the voyage or excursion;

Interesting and informative as always JFM. Thank you. :)

I'm always tempted by these med boating threads, the sun and water warm enough to swim in sounds great. I also like the sound of a boat swap but I didnt see many listings on the swap site.

Many a time I've pondered moving my boat to the med but I just don't think I would be able to make enough regular trips, just now I can be on my boat within an hour. Maybe a better option for me would be to take on a sharer for my boat, move it to the med, releasing some funds to buy a smaller boat to be kept in the uk?

LOL, how does it sound, a 26 degrees sea water in a natural swimming pool in November? :D

Thing to remember is that you can use your boat all year round in the Med.

OK, some days it does rain or is cloudy but it is very rarely cold like the UK.

Many Scots keep their boats in Mallorca and say they get to use them more than they did in the UK.

We never put our boat on the hard other that at anti fouling time.

It all comes down to personal circumstances and how far you live from your boat. If you have a job which leaves you only weekends and a fortnight's holiday a year you would indeed struggle to get the use out of your pride & joy.
If however you are 5 hours away from your boat (as we were) and you work for yourself and can even work ((kind of) from your boat then things are very different. If retired or semi retired - I can see absolutely NO reason to stay in the uk
We have happily swapped a year's worth of UK weekends for 3 trips a year to Greece, each trip around 4 weeks and have never had such quality time afloat.
