...... and only keep one. Which sailing book would you hold on to? To start the ball rolling, I could not part with the collected edition of Bill Tilman.
Libby Purves edited it and says of our hero "he writes like an angel". A bit girlie but I have to agree.

I've just run my finger along the shelves; from Adlard Coles and American Practical Navigator ( Bowditch ) to the West Coast of Scotland Pilot.......

.....Peyton, Hiscock, O'Brien, Newby, Conrad, Worsley, Lewis, Coles, King, Harland......

Tilman's superb anthology is with my neighbour, who is deep-embedded in chemotherapy. My collection of Moistessier was 'liberated' by a brother-in-law some 20 years ago. I got his sister in a lop-sided kind of exchange.

One day, insh'allah, I will own a boat with a bookshelf sufficient for my books...... In the interim, may I suggest this? You will enjoy it.....

OK - well you have BB to blame, that I've ventured here - his recommendation - who am I to refuse?

And one thing I'm tempted to do: get rid of all my boaty books. I've done it with magazines - and I never read them these days. Who knows about the future, but someone might like them. I'm going to ask my (newly) boaty nephew first.

Talbot, there is always a place on board for a man with some books and a soul.

Skipper of the steel pilot cutter 'Compendium' is Bernard Moitessier. Mr. Tilman is first mate and will take good charge of navigation, [once we are offshore].

Mrs Smeeton comes along because she is a hell of a lot tougher than all the rest of us. She will advise on MOB procedure.

Denis Desoutter will be welcomed by all.

A bunk space must be found for Glenn Tieman, who will be encouraged by Bernard M to write more of his Pacific wanderings.

My 'old man', Sam Rigby , ex Merchant Service, Coldstream, would like to be aboard, and so he can be, because I am the owner of this boat.

There is room for more !

'Cape Horn Breed' by Capt. W.H. S. Jones and its sequel 'All Hands Aloft'. Reading these books will make your face wet and make you feel a big softy.

Without doubt I would keep my copy of 'How to sail around the world' by Hal Roth. Actually I'd find it hard to part with any of his books. Beautifully written and full of good practical advice that is none the worse for being a few years old!
