DON'T DO IT LIKE MOODY DID
Today was the rudder off day to cure the leak up the rudder post. The skeg shoe is held on with 3/8" copper rivets. Grind/drill the heads off and knock them out. No.1 -20 mins feeling our way. Nos 2&3 - 10 mins each. No.4 an hour and a half. Have the boat lifted to withdraw the rudder stock completely. Replace two O-rings in the bottom bearing. Re-install rudder. New rivets on order.
Cost 60p for O-rings, £50 for rivets (annealed and peaned one end), £3m for an extended boat lift.
Still, also replaced heads outlet seacock which went very well with my new humungous adjustable spanner (available for hire at very reasonably rates).
A long day..........Survey, rivets and antifoul next week and back in.
