I've just bought some and made the mistake of reading the leaflet that came with it. It seems to do everything - it gets rid of the water and the bugs and cleans the valves and so on and so on - also making the engine run better with reduced emissions. So if it is so wonderful why do the oil companies not put something similar into the fuel in the first place - they are after all competing with each other to persuade buyers to buy their brands?

My personal experience of Startron was that Yes it does all that it says on the tin. However the dead bugs lay on the bottom of the fuel tank and after some time caused a blockage in the narrow pipe to the main main fuel filter obviously caused by fuel pump suction. Again I think that farther treatment or possibly cleaning the dead bug out of the fuel tank was needed. I switched to the Marine 16 bug treatment plus the Diesel bug complete package with good success as the dead bug was then broken down and appeared to be burnt off under normal engine use. No matter what additive you decide on, if at all possible clean out your fuel tank and filter your fuel when filling in future. As I say personal experience and each to their own methods I suppose.

Because most fuel, unlike yacht fuel, is used very soon after it's delivered and so has no time for the nasties which plague us to take a hold. Well, that's the diesel bug side. Everything claims to clean valves, reduce emissions, add power and increase fuel economy. Ha. Ha.

It certainly does that. I had a very old but perfectly well operating volvo md7 in my last boat. Never leaked a drop of oil. Until I put startron in the diesel. Within a few hours the detergent had done a fantastic job of cleaning out all the gunk from the oil seals and the old girl leaked like a sieve. Ended up replacing it with another md7 but did not put startron in that engine, nor my current volvo 2003. I think it's fine to use on a young engine or from new but beware on an old engine. Just my own experience. +1 for marine 16. Had a bad dose of diesel bug last year. A shock treatment (half bottle) of that stuff sorted it out without needing to drain the tank. Has run perfectly since and I add marine 16 to all new fuel put in the boat.
