Well, having bashed our way back from France yesterday afternoon, (Fairline TArga 48), and you were the young girl in the little saily type thing...........weaving around in the entrance to Hayling Island, Sparkes Marina............I would like to whole heartedly thank you for recovering one of our fenders! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I will never moan again about you lot clogging up the main channel with your saily things, thanks again!

N.B. For the record it seems French saily boaters are happy to wave at motor boats, why dont you lot extend the same courtesy? I know thats a generalisation but most of you dont want to know! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also am at a total los as to why so many saily boaters cant be bothered to wave back! My daughter thinks its a game, to try and get them to extend the courtesy!

Lotsa Mobo guys waved as they bombed past when I wasanchored off Beaulieu Entrance - standing on the foredeck slowly raising and lowering my arms in the traditional Mayday manner cos my gearbox had burnt out.
Would they have stopped had I hoisted NC, or F or K or V??? Perhaps burning oily rags might have attracted more attention . . .

Same here, but that goes for boats from certain Dublin yacht clubs too /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

How people can look at you as you extend a friendly wave and just turn away is beyond me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I wave at loads of Mobos exceeding the speed limit and causing havoc on our mid stream pontoon berths, they never wave back though.

My daughter thinks its because their heads only point forward and they appear not to have peripheral vision.

I often wave at all boaters at sea, or going in and out of marinas, once berthed I find it funny when you wave and they disappear below decks.

I waved to 2 powerboat owners yesterday - one coming up behind me in the River Medina who helpfully indicated which side he was going to pass me, and another just outside Cowes who passed about 10m away at 25 knots creating a very nasty 3' wash. They got different sorts of wave though - the one who wasn't the ignorant to$$er with no brain and a small richard got the friendly wave using all my fingers.

I always wave but I think boaters are no different to anyone else, some are friendly some are not. If they don't wave back it doesn't bother me it's just nice when they do.

What is most important, for us saily types, is to acknowledge a mobo driver with a wave when it is clear he has altered his course to avoid us. OK some may say that hardly happens, if you watch closely it does happen.

In fairness, you cant spend all your time waving to everyone, especially in crowded waters, but if someone does wave, then wave back, its simple good manners to acknowledge someones courtesy or their greeting.

If you are a sailor and you choose not to say thanks, then have no right to pass judgement on a bad mannered mobo driver.

and it does help if you're waving at someone wearing a baseball cap - to wear one yourself, otherwise they won't wave back .... as demonstrated yesterday evening!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Around here, most people wave happily, even the commercial fishing types. Not the image often put about of the French. The odd ones that don´t, I assume were not looking.
