The course is product design, not invention, so it's OK to improve something that already exists. Recollect that a few years ago a student designed and put into production a MOB system based on idea of jib enveloping the punter in the water. Storage of some sort is always a safe fall back. What about a portable chart surface for navigating in the cockpit for singlehanders.

LED anchor light with photosensitive switch and rechargable from solar panel - like the garden lights, but enough lumens to be really useful. There's lots of good design in that - the radial coverage of the individual LEDs, the brightness and hence range, the capacity and charging rate of the batteries etc. Does he have to do some sort of market survey, and costing as well?

If he designs one, can he sell me a prototype?

I hope he enjoys it

How about a rudder that can work at high levels of attach without stalling. You can find details of this issue from windsurfers fins and a few other places.

Or paint that stops barnacles and weed growing on the hull, can't be that difficult surely? make a fortune if it worked.

Solar powered active radar reflector ?

Boat that is built with full life cycle in mind. Far far too many boats are semi fitted out before internal mouldings or topside mouldings are fitted.

Consequence, when it comes to replacement of sea cocks, engines, wiring etc etc, the owner is faced with a destruction job before he can complete a simple maintenance task, and then to undertake a re-building project that could have been avoided by simple pre-production product engineering.

Thank you all. Yes, quite right - it's not necessary to invent - innovative adaptation (or ripping off as I prefer to call it) of other ideas is equally acceptable!. He's also considering a mast-top instrument panel that can avoid going up the mast and a system for easy access of contents of a deep galley fridge. Further ideas (genuine or amusing!) welcome!!
