about updates / re-installs as they have been reported to be on this forum, what are the alternatives like? Imray for example?

Don't know about Android but the Imray offering is no good for navigation on the iPad with its poor detail levels.

They're raster charts with exactly the same content as the printed paper ones. There's unlikely to be much more detail available from the surveys, so if Navionics is zooming in closer it's interpolating (making stuff up) to fill the gaps.
Unless perhaps you only have the free sample charts and haven't realised you're supposed to buy more? The samples are pair of passage charts of east and west Channel, so obviously they're not going to be much good for navigating, say, Poole Harbour.

For every "report" there will most likely be hundreds, including me, who have used Navionics on iPad and iPhone since they first came out and who are very happy with the service.

It seems that the Apple system of supplying apps does allow you to re-install after a system update but the android one does not. Navionics say its a one time purchase and if it gets wiped in an update, you have to buy it again.
Now I dont want an IPad when I can get a better android tablet for less but there is this issue of navionics updates on them.

I'm sure you are right. Perhaps I was unlucky that I needed to reload so soon after purchase but that is when the problems come. Everything I've heard says they are fine in uninterrupted use but the problem is you never know when you will need to do a reset of the tablet.
I'm a complete amateur with Android and apps but I believe their terms are that you can always download again what you have already paid for. If I'm right Navionics are breaking their agreement with Android but they get away with it by just being obstructive or not communicating

marine navigator app works for SHOM France BSB .KAP charts which will help me out with the Nexus 7 until Navionics realise 6 million of these are expected to sell by late 2013.The free version is crippled.

Android definitely does (or should do) this. Later releases and implementations are much better but the most basic method is to simply try to buy the app again. Google Play should simply show "Purchased" and let you download it as long as you're logged in with the same account. My Asus tablet has the slickest of them all as it has an app to backup apps and lets you create images of either all the apps for a clean install of them or all the apps with data, They're saved to the SD card as a file that you can keep anywhere want by copying it off. It's different from the Apple iOS method of taking a complete image as the OS is totally separate. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not. On my Galaxy S3 'phone it recognised a brand new phone and downloaded all my apps from the Play store - I came back after an hour or so and it was all done. Not quite so sure that's always good as I may not have wanted them all on there; in fact they may not have fitted.
Try signing into https://play.google.com/apps on a PC. It should show all your devices for the account you are using. Apps you have installed on the selected device show in the top half of the screen. Apps not installed show in you Library in the lower half. You can click on install and it will download on to the device and be there waiting for you.

Thanks Grumpy - I did what you suggested and it listed my apps ( without me having to identify myself in any way - bit too much "big brother" 
).
Not sure though whether that would allow me to re-install navionics if I were to wipe it off my phone. And how do I use the system to install the same apps on a tablet if I bought one?

Samsung, Asus, Nexus would immediately spring to mind. I wouldn't say they're necessarily better as it's so subjective but to many people they are preferred regardless of price.

It should let you re-install as many times as you want as long as you've purchased it. If you remove the app it will simply show in the Library instead of Installed. The dodgy bit with Navionics is that they sometimes discontinue an App and then make you purchase a new one with the latest and greatest on it. As long as the actual app you purchased is still for sale you should be able to re-install no problem though.
If you buy a new device it gets detected and added to the list of devices so, if I bought a Galaxy Nexus 7, it would appear at the end of the device names shown immediately above "Apps Installed on O2 Samsung GT-I9300".
If I click on one of the other devices on that list it will show me the apps installed on that device instead. In other words, if I had an empty Nexus 7, it would show all the apps I'd purchased in "Other apps in my library" but none under "Apps Installed on Galaxy Nexus 7" . I can then then click on the INSTALL button on each app in the library and it will show me all the devices with the ones I can't install it on greyed out. Clicking on the "Galaxy Nexus 7" button will cause the app to be downloaded to the Nexus 7 even if you're nowhere near it at the time, assuming it has a connection of course. The slightly dodgy bit is it'll do it over a 3G connection if you're not careful but then you should know where your device is but I'd make sure the WiFi is enabled

Is this just on Asus tablets or is it available on the app store? I have tried some of the apps that claim to create an .apk file but they don't always appear to work with all apps.

Navionics policy is that it is a one time purchase. The security settings do not allow you to back it up. If you get a new phone you will probably not be able to reload it via google play, which does an excellent job with all other apps. Navionics disable this feature for their software.
In particular navionics do not want you to use the non hd version on tablets, falsely claiming incompatibility.
However this is not true and they work. It just takes a lot of hassle to get them to let you have the software you paid for. Result being disatisfaction.

Hmm. I have some sympathy with Navionics who supply me for £20 (I think that was the original price) with the charts that I would normally have to pay several hundred for.
That said I wont hesitate to find a way round their security if I can. Which so far I cannot!

Sadly it comes with Asus tablets - I'm trying to find a way to get it onto my Galaxy but, even if I could, I suspect I'd have to root it in which case I may as well use Titanium Backup, which is excellent as long as your phone is rooted but not much use if it isn't.
