I wouldn’t have any !

First time with all the family on the boat, had the ice maker repaired, it’s cold but doesn’t make ice, had the passerelle repaired and serviced, blue a hydraulic hose off first time we used it and top everything off, one of the turbo’s decided to pack in.

Feel for you Chris .
Think me and others have intimated the DIY + occasional expert buy in route in the SoF .
Even with flights , car hire etc and your time it still works out cheaper .But that’s not the point it ( what ever it is ) needs to work and be serviced correctly, tested etc ..... With the tinternet and various forums you can research stuff quickly.

Anyhow no preaching from the pulpit from me and others will help now .

Tells us more about the turbos .
Did you scrub the stern gear before attempting to plane her ?
How did it all become apparent.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
Particularly for the packed turbo, which sounds expensive.
....not to mention that I have the same engines as yours! How many hours did yours clocked? Mine are around 16 hundreds.

That aside, what is the impeller in the pic below? I can't associate it to any of the faults you mentioned....

I assumed it’s the blades of the turbo? Sometimes they just need a bit of persuasion if not turning. Hopefully nothing more than that.

Thats the wheel that should be in the turbo. Pic shows broken shaft.
Correct, it’s the exhaust side of the turbo, I’m waiting for a quotation to replace it from sud diesel marine, they diagnosed the problem, boat lost all power and would only run up to 1000 rpm, I took it apart and if they add the sof tax, I’ll get one in the UK and fit it myself.

Did the engine ingest any debris from the intake?

I wonder what the cause was.

I was thinking EGT s through the roof ?
It’s a big boat with huge props....in dia as well as pitch ( Arnies ) for v8 800 s to get up and plane.
Equivalent Itama a 55 has 1360 Hp V12s.So more headroom with finer pitched and fouled stern gear before excessive EGTs

The tips burn off , the rotor becomes unbalanced, harmonic vibrations fracture the shaft .Oil probably bakes on the bearings .

They are water cooled so it could ( stern gear spotless ) be a failure of that cooling circuit leading to bearing failure and wobble = fracture .

Dont know off hand where the water supply or oil supply feeds come from .....have a look tomorrow.

Theres a single circular clamp to hold the filter on .Size 14 mm nut .
They do have a habit of coming off unless you do up the single nut real tight .
The filter seen in pic 2 ^^ rhs on its side acts as a muffler as well to damp the turbo whistle.
If they drop off the infamous or famous MAN turbo whistle gets very profound ...I can hear it on my boat .

You can hear the whistle next time you are @ a uk station.( none electric ) as the diesel rail cars , those with the engines slung underneath are MANs .....just listen as they pull away .Once up to speed or off load it goes .Personally I like it .
And yes I have had a couple drop off ....but as said instantly tell by the whistle and thankfully nothing ingested .

Can you get a re built turbo from anywhere, exchanging your faulty one? That’s what I’d be looking to do, particularly if time is of the essence.

I don’t know the engine but assume there’s a charge air cooler.

ever the optimist.....hopefully it has caught the bits missing from the compressor wheel. You need to find the bits you can and ”rebuild” it, like a jigsaw to confirm nothing went into the engine
