Got a couple of people coming down to see my boat and I don't really know what to do should anyone want to go ahead and buy.

She is registered and so therefore what paperwork do I need and what do I do about deposits/seatrials and survey?

What happens when ?

Many thanks

Nick

Are you sure you're an estate agent??!!

Extract loads of cash and run!

The RYA publish a contract that you can use. Many insist on a 10% returnable deposit before a sea trial, Contact the register of shipping for the transfer forms, naturally there's a charge!

Up to you if you want to give them a free seatrial. You'll have to decide about that when you meet them

Then if they go ahead and offer and you agree, sign contract and take 10% deposit

Then let them lift out/survey if they want. This is their choice

Then haggle survey results and agree final price.

Then they wire you the money, or possibly wire some of it to Finance co if there's a mortgage (you will have to get finance co to write a letter stating the settlement amount needed) and when you get the money fill in a Bill of Sale (free pdf download from www.mcga.gov.uk) and give it to them, and the boat is theirs

Very much like buying a house except the survey comes after contract

Fraid not Mike as we are intending to stick at Hythe (still miss you all at Bray of course!). Have some next boat ideas but those whom I have mentioned them to have laughed........so will keep quiet for the time being.

They just keep muttering about pipes and slippers.......

Regards

Nick

Thanks John but was wondering whether our 'Cast Off' name can be put on some sort of retention rather like a car registration as we have not as yet seriously started to look at other boats until we have the dosh in our mits?

Also as there is no mortgage on boat and she is P1 registered how long should the whole process take?

Thanks

Nick

name retention part 1

Afaik there is no retention system. But ring MCGA Cardiff, there are about 4 ladies who handle the names and papers, by alphabet groups based on the boat name- you will therefore have the same lady who did ours (ours begins wiv B) I've forgotten her name, india/pakistan name, she was very helpful and would explain/help I'm sure. Get the contact numbers by drilling deep on www.mcga.gov.uk

If you cannot put on retention you are a bit stuck. All I can think of are PITA suggestions. Eg you have a contract with buyer so he is oblisged to keep it Cast Off then flip the name to you later, when you say. A bit messy imho and I wouldn't "put off" a buyer with a weirdo sounding demand

Or find another boat and reg that Cast Off meantime. A dinghy, a good friend's boat, whatever. It has to be a real boat not mythical becuase of the tonnage survey which is done by a surveyor. This will cost praps £300 in survey fees and fees to cardiff. Also whatever boat you use will need history eg builder certif + bills of sale, so not that easy.....

Lack of mortgage will make your sale easier because no finance company to faff around giving you "settlement figures". You just do as my post above - viewing, set price, contract+deposit, survey, more haggle, they pay you, you give them a BOS and the keys. Easy, at least in principle...

Good luck

Beware timewasters. Any serious buyer will expect to pay a deposit and will want a survey. Sale being subject survey with the deposit returnable etc. After a series of timewasters and dreamers we sold thro' a broker. It grieved me to pay his commission but I must say he earned his money when it came to the haggling/money/paperwork. I see you live a fair way from your boat - as we do - so after a few trips wasted on timewasters you may get homocidal. If you are ever down Dartmoor way drop in and see me.

Good luck Nick......and a comment or two

Having bought and sold a few boats,Capt C is quite correct in that 99.99 of viewers are timewasters or serial boatviewers like me/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.Think you can prob tell within first few seconds if you have a possible buyer or just someone going through the motions in order not to give offence.
Whenever her ladyship and me go to look at anything will decide within few brief moments if boat is of interest cos first impressions count. The asking price of boat will then be taken into account.
Good sign from buyers point of view is if ALL personal gear has been removed with no trace of spare clothing in lockers etc. This means new boat is already purchased and/or seller has long ago made up his mind to get rid of boat.
Gear on board means boat just on market or seller has put boat up to test selling prices. So will not consider "cheeky" bids yet.
Ps.If buyer has boat to sell, ignore any proclamations that it is almost sold. IMHO./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
