Idiot needs advice for mega cockpit radio/cd/ipod audio

:D:D
I've got the Fusion ipod system in my Targa 40 - head unit with ipod doc down below, couple of Focal speakers in the saloon powered straight off the head unit, then a wired remote control at the helm, two 7" alpine speakers at the helm, two more in the radar arch, and a 10" sub in the helm seat base. All the cockpit speakers are driven off an alpine marine amp. Sounds very nice, and has some welly for those out-at-sea occasions when you need a bit of Dizzee Rascal in your life.

Cheers
Jimmy

We have a usual cockpit radio but it's not a proper racket, not really. It's okay, but not LOUD enough at sea. I went to a french halfords, saw some kenwood stuff but ran out again cos i daren't ask all the idiot questions. Or not in french anyway. I can wire things but um, no expert. The cockpit speakers say they're ok to 80 watts. Is that mega loud? If there's a kit i could get swmbo to buy in the uk and i wire it up, i'd buy it. I need two speakers inside, two outside, an amplifier and the er head unit i think it's called. I definitely got to be able to plug in an ipod. I might need a sub woofer. In fact, to hell with it, we could have a grown-up full woofer, perhaps? Well, it makes a change from anchor threads...

Advice welcome. Brendan has just gotta know about this? Or others?

I run my 'ipod classic' through a JVC head unit (using a JVC ipod dock
bought from amazon iirc).

It works really well, but for one niggle, something you may like to
consider when looking for yours.

There are two methods of connecting the ipod, 'Line In', this gives
full control of the ipod (at the actual ipod) so you can search menus
and hit play... the downside is that you have to go into the saloon
and make changes at the ipod.

or,

the unit takes over control of the ipod, this allows you to stow the
ipod and use the head unit to navigate the audio. This is all very
well for a car driver who is sat on top of the head unit, but for some
reason JVC decided the remote was surplus during this config and
only the D-pad on the head unit can traverse the ipod menus (even
though the remote has it's own D-pad).

I can live with this, but it is so handy to point the remote through
the saloon doors to change volume etc. while on passage. With
the JVC you can't even skip the track or FFW on the remote, obviously
you can at the head unit. I guess how annoying this is will depend upon
your installation.

In summary, take your ipod in and ensure you get full control on the
remote is my advice from experience. The trouble is, the children who
design the menus don't seem to accept that ICE is not just used in
cars.

p.s. if you go for a home amp for example, I would be interested to
know which you choose, I am currently in the market for a surround
amp with a neat ipod dock for home.

I'm surprised someone has not developed a device that takes NMEA windspeed data and modifies the playlist accordingly, so that at F1 you might get L'Apres-midi d'un Faune, while F6 might give you Ride of the Valkyries or 1812. (Sorry, don't know where Dizzee Rascal would fit in.)
