Hi all,
I have just obtained a Mercury outboard, but i am having trouble id'ing it for servicing.
I have tried the stickies to check the serial numbers to no avail except 1 posibility.
On the engine itself, is the number 843-8693, with a 1 in a square. (picture 1)
It seems to correspond to a 'Mercury Marine 3.5 6202173 and up' on the L&M Marine site. The exploded diagrams look the same too.

Description as follows:
Case. Has following decals. (Picture 2 & 3).
The plate by the transome mount says it was made in Mexico and has the serial number A115459.
It has 1 spark plug and a fuel mix of 50:1. I assume its two stroke.

I hope someone can help me, as i need to check that the cooling system works properly. There doesn't seem to be any tube for ejecting water?
regards
Chris

There is a site for outboard engine number that lists several makes, it matches engine numbers with make, model and year of manufacture.

Try Google and in the mean time I will try to find the bookmark in my long long lists.

It's a 1985 ish, from the decals. It's the one with the tubular handlebar all the way around, right? Made in mexico, as you say. Sorry to rain on your parade, but they were never good runners or starters. I had one. Soon after, Merc dropped it and bought the Tohatsu instead and badged it merc - that was a good engine

IIRC there is no water telltale for the cooling. It's easy and cheap to drop the box off and put a new impeller in, then the cooling will be fine so long as it isn't crusted up inside

As you say, it is a 50-1 two stroke

Thanks for the reply Jfm, I know the year now and have found the exploded diagrams.
It started first time, and idles fine. I shall drop the bottom off and check the impeller.
Thanks again
Chris
