Identify the Frigates...

Can someone who knows identify these old Frigates parked in the usual spot toward Fareham Creek.

I'd like to know what they all are, but failing that, which one is Chatham and how can you tell?

It's a sad sight though..I can't understand why now that we are no longer fighting the cold war, have sold off all our loss making nationalised industries, flogged off our nationised utilities-all to save us money- we can no longer afford a decent armed forces and are mired in debt.

Maybe it's time to take some SLR's out of mothballs , line up some ' politicians' and shoot the fekkers.
 
Chatham is the forward frigate on the top page.

She had a partially black painted foremast which carried the type 967/8 radar scanner.

That's assuming they are all the batch three ships...:rolleyes:

Batch one and two ships also had black painted foremasts for some of their careers... As did the batch threes, but I think Chatham was the last one...

Yes they are the 4 batch 3 type 22's.
I was working for the QHM's department in Devonport this time last year when they were towed up to Portsmouth. There was a rumour at the time that Cornwall was going to be used as a visitor attraction whilst the Victory was having her refit. Also Campbeltown had just completed a 12 month refit up in Rosyth and was about to deploy before she was decomissioned and Cumberland had her decomission anounced to her whilst she was still out in Libia.
I had the luck of serving on Cornwall twice and Campbeltown and Brave albeit she was a batch 2 Type 22. I have to say the 22's were by far the better ships ive served on amongst the other class of frigates and Destroyers i served on.
They probably had there reasons to get rid of them but I still think its a shame.

They're getting on a bit and have large manning requirements; a lot of the gear is designed for operator maintenance rather than repair-by-replacement, the RN are getting out of that game. This plus the age make them expensive compared to the T23s.

They should have been able to go another decade... But if you are going to cut frigates then they were the odvious choice... The type 23 is getting the new 3d radars... And the new Camm missile.. The 22's couldn't get the Camm as its a vls launched system... So in two or three years The 22's would have had no were near to as good a radar and a second rate Sam..

Plus the type 23 has a smaller compliment by 20%... So they cost less to run..

Best save the money on them and keep the upgrades on the 23's... Which will make them a much more capable platform.
 
We rank fourth in world defence spending, behind the USA, China and Russia. The rest of the world gets by quite happily spending considerably less. There's a decent argument to be made for cutting back still further.

Who else is going to train our young people?

Have we slipped up or down the spending rankings?

( I'm very pro armed forces training because had it not been for joining the Royal Navy I'd still be cleaning bogs for next to f uck all a week.)

I had the good fortune to be appointed Squadron Medical Officer to the 2nd Frigate Squadron in 1985 - HM Ships Broadsword, Brilliant, Battleaxe and Brazen - with Boxer and Beaver commissioning. Brave was later. Happy memories!:)
I've got mixed feelings about the fate of ships after they are decommissioned. Of these seven, four were sold, one scrapped and two sunk as targets...

In 1988 we were sixth. We're now spending more than France and Germany who outspent us then.

yes I agree with all your comments about it was all about money saving in every sense with the running, maintainace and man power costs.

I had heard of a T26 project which are to be the T23 replcements.

I think the reason why so many of us prefered T22's over T23's is because of the T23's lean manning, Which I here that some of the old T42 ratings now don't like the T45's for that same reason.
For me I always felt under protected on T23's if we had to go to war. But they were excelent at what they were designed for ASW.
 
I am not going to make any pseudo political points about defence and cuts. What I will say is that I have served on all those Frigates and have extremely happy memories of my time on them. I was out in the Far East on Chatham and in the USA on The Mighty Sausage (HMS Cumberland) etc etc. Some hard work but some very happy times on very capable ships. They were manpower intensive though!

1988 I was locuming in the sick bay in HMS Rooke (Gibraltar), when Cornwall came in, fresh out of the box. CTP was arranged, and RPC sent to sick bay (obviously a ploy to get some nurses for their party). Freeloading locum MO (me) went along, had a jolly good time, and we all got invited back for a sea day firing SeaWolf at towed targets. CO was Capt Chris Wreford-Brown of Belgrano fame. Excellent day, rounded off by an impromptu mess dinner in the wardroom with the nurses (and myself) as guests of honour.

Seems like yesterday, and there she is at the end of her career (a bit like me).
