Identify surge protector

I found this device under a shroud base on our Beneteau Oceanis 400.

What is it? Some sort of lightning surge protector?

Claude are manufacturers of surge protection equipment (amongst other things). So I would hazard a guess its for lightening protection as you surmised. Where does the other end of the braid go? Keel? Some form of grounding plate?

I think the braid runs fore and aft but I haven't yet found the exact route. One thing I did find was one end with no sort of termination or anything, but it may have travelled via the keel or some other point.
