Ideas required to make locker access bigger please

I have a large storage bin under the fore bunk. It has two lids to provide access.

Problem is I need slightly bigger access holes to fit large items in the locker.

I need to remove the centre piece of the panel at the points marked, but still allow it to be replaced easily, and still support the lids .

It also has to sit flush, as it is under a bunk

Ideas please

Maybe I'm missing something but why not just cut it out and fix a bit of ply underneath each of the remaining edges to form a small rebate? Then simply place the cut out section on the new ply rebates. If necessary either fit some pins to locate the section or simply screw it down.

-Cut across flush to horizontals then you have choices:
Longitudinal wooden bar that slides into U brackets at each end, then the bit that you cut out sits / clips on top.
-Screw and glue protruding lips to horizontals from under side where you cut, for central section to rest on / clip to.
-Do away with centre bit and make new full width lid.

Why not just make one large lid.

Are you sure that aft... Looks like the pointy end to me..

You could cut it at the two marks, and put some hardwood blocks underneath to support the cross piece, and then use some captive nuts and bolts to fix it back in place. Or you could remove the beam, and join the locker lids together with it to make a single lid, you'll need a couple of blocks to support the assembly where you have cut it to ensure it doesn't sag, but these could be quite small.
