Ideas please for clamp to use as a shaft brake

I am working on a brake that can be operated with a solenoid which is wired into the main engine start cable so that the brake is always on but as soon as the engine power supply is on the brake is held OFF a simple arm hinged so that It rests on the plain dia of the coupling possible with a wooden shoe attached to the metal arm, one end hinged below the coupling and at the other end a spring or bungie applying sufficient pressure on the coupling to stop it when sailing or moored but as soon as power is applied to the engine starter button the solenoid which will be attached to the metal arm pulling in the opposite direction to the bungie will hold the shoe off enough to allow the shaft to rotate, all this depends on how much load is needed to stop the shaft. I will try and make a drawing and post it here soon.
Regards Mike.

Cheapest and quickest solution would probably be the molegrip approach. Lidl, from time to time, offer a set of three, one of which looks like this type:

Simply line the curved jaws with a strip of leather from an old belt to avoid damage to the shaft. Adjust the tension, using the bolt at the end of the handle, so that the shaft just stops rotating. If necessary put a block of wood against which the pliers handle will rest. Unless you overdo the pressure, the jaws will slip should you engage drive and forget to remove the pliers.

Mole grips were suggested (and rejected) in a much earlier reply. I understand that Peter has now installed a proper shaft brake. Perhaps he will post a picture soon.
