Ideas for JFM

it looks like it's on the market

Essex boat yard, fantastic, shame I'm £840000 short lol

are you adding a custom windscreen for the flybridge helm?

Well. tis complex. I dont like the shape of the Sq78 upper dash at all. I spoke to FL about making a whole new one but there isn't time in their build schedule for the slot number I've got (boat #70). So they will fit the standard dash and allow me some spare length on the hydraulic lines, and they will also supply me now a whole dash moulding. With this extra dash I will find a specialist GRP firm to mod the shape of it so as to make a new plug. Then take a mould off that. Then cast a whole new upper dash which we will fit at EBY after LIBS, ie next spring before the boat heads south

Reason for all this is that I want the driver on the left, and the navigator on the right in a position to see BOTH screens, and also I want the nav screens brought more vertical and closer to the navigator. Like Sq58. It'll have perspex along top edge so I still want to incorporate the edge lighting thing Wakeup

None of that is any criticism of FL btw. They are doing their best to help me within the production schedule they need to work to, and I'm already distracting them with much other customisation work. Getting the fin stabiliser engineering sorted out is the number 1 priority. Their helpful offer to supply me an extra dash to play with offsite will let me do what I want

I have another slight glitch. I had an accident on Thursday and smashed my left leg in a few places. Have had two operations to screw it all back together. I'm fine, apart from the leg, and it's not as bad as Barry Sheene's. But I'll be on crutches for a couple of months which gets in the way of factory visits and stuff, and organising things like the dash.

...be the envy of your friends?

Edited to add: I don't sell this stuff but do help manufacture it. Normally sold to commercial marine markets, we have products in the pipeline that will give greatly enhanced radar picture and might be more of a fit to the high end leisure market.

Wow, that looks top stuff. Getting it to work is a bit beyond me right now but I'll look out for new releases Rutter might make for the leisure market. I'm having Garmin gear on the boat, and have specced their top of range high power digital radar scanner. 4 foot I think, unless they can fit a 6 footer

Ouch, that must hurt!
Sorry to hear that, though you must be already fine if you're posting here just a couple of days after two operations!
All the very best for a fast and complete recovery.

So sorry to hear that. Glad you are otherwise ok and best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Why the move away from Raymarine?

Well i have got to quite like the spec of the latest Garmin gear, plus it is cheaper in that the standard stuff that comes with the boat is discounted so it would cost me lots to swap to Raymarine even for like for like spec, and the deal with FL is that they use the boat for LIBS2011 so they kinda need it to be Garmin. So, much as I like Raym, I'm happy to switch to Garmin this time

Yep thanks guys for good wishes on accident/recovery. I'm absolutely fine. It's just very inconvenient not being able to walk, that's all. But only 2-3 months, no worries

Just think how much you can plan in that time!

If you are looking for a specialist GRP chappie I can recommend Outhill Boat Builders near Henley in Arden, of course there are many more and I should not recommend one being from IPC and all that however I have purchased from this company and exceptionally pleased with their work.

Geez, jfm, I guess leading that conga line over the top of the bar on election night wasn't such a good idea, looking back?

Holey cow J ! , hope you are on the mend quickly , best wishes from us all here at ORY.

Still, think of all that spare time you are going to have dreaming up new kit to screw onto the new boat :-)

Thanks Richard. I'll look up Outhill and see if they will make the dash for me. Come to think of it, I've heard of them before - they make consoles and seats etc for RIBs

No no no! We need to push the boundries here. What JFM needs is one of these.

You wont believe what this thing does!!

It appears that what it does is turn your girlfriend into a mermaid when she gets, err.., wet.

A tad inconvenient I'd have thought! :D

Also, how do you get the thing ashore again? You have to retract the outdrive once in shallow water which means you have no motive power, so how do you get far enough in and up the beach for the wheels to work?

Fantastic thing apart from the mermaid and getting stranded afloat thing though, I want one!
