I'm now confused.

Reading the blog of a boat that's currently crossing the pond on the Arc, they think keeping the fridge at 4⁰C is the best temp to preserve the food and keep the electrickery consumption at its most economical.

I used to think that 6⁰C was the ultimate temp for preserving food, keeping the beers cool and consuming fewer amps?

Your thoughts, please?

My fridge at home is set at around 4C.

I haven't a clue how cold the one on the boat is, but on a hot summers day it does struggle. It is around 40 years old, possibly rubbish insulation and runs on gas unless in a marina, and the food can go off quicker, but I suspect boat motion doesn't help.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends that fridges in the UK should be set to 5°C or below.
Thank you. I assume, unlike most gubbermunt agencies, these guys actually know what they're waffling on about....

BRB, am off the set my thermostat to 5⁰C

What is "fridge temperature" ? I have about -20°C at the evaporator, while all inside the box temperatures can vary by several degrees with the same thermostat setting... Or maybe one should fill it completely, wait several days without ever opening it to let inside temperature becoming more or less uniform, then measure?
My rough indicator is beer cans temperature felt by hand :)

Antarctica! If you get the chance to go there, take it (but one week should be enough)

4⁰C is the perfect temperature for beer IMO, so they are spot on. I try and keep all my fridges, including the one on the boat, at 4⁰C or maybe a degree colder.
