Icy pontoons

Should pontoons be gritted by the marina. It was treacherous this morning. I made Mr B get out of bed and walk me to my car

Always a difficult subject, because there's no law that says you must grit icy surfaces. The marina owners have the same liability as anyone else, to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of people on their premises. It is up to them to assess the various risks around their site and to take appropriate action to minimise these risks and to alert people to the danger. Failure to do so, if it results in an accident, could mean that they get taken to court by the Health and Safety Executive but normally this would only happen if there were to be a serious injury as a result of their negligence.

It's open to you to sue them if you suffer injury and there are loads of ambulance chasing law firms out there, just waiting for your call. All I'd say about that is that they are also encouraging people to sue boat owners if they suffer an injury whilst on board somebody else's craft. Do you want to encourage such pondlife? Bear in mind, also, my previous homily a few weeks back, on the subject of suitable footware, with particular reference to the products of Messrs Choo and Blahnik..............

I'd say that the best thing to do would be to have a quiet, friendly word with the Marina Management and ask them if they can do something; the only danger with this, I guess, is that it could be regarded as rubbing your liveaboard status in their faces - I can't remember to what extent they officially allow liveaboards at Brighton?

I'm very concerned about your treatment of Mr B. and don't see why he needed to be pulled out of bed to walk you to the car - surely he would have heard if you'd fallen in? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Jill and I got a pair each the other year and they're really great on icy pontoons. You can just walk normally when everyone else is cautiously shuffling along at a snail's pace!

I would also expect a true gentleman to be waiting with something warm (a drink perhaps - possibly even a stiff one) for your return in the evening

I slithered out of the pit onto an icy pontoon in Brighton on Sunday morning.
Very dodgy but clears the head and probably less risky than some things we do!!

Your in the wrong place Pauline. Our pontoons here at Troon are gritted by the night staff if frost and ice has fallen by dawn!!!
As for here today after heavy passing snow showers the sky is blue with an outside air temp of minus 2 but the North F6 wind giving a chill factor of minus 12...roll on spring. Hope the soth coast not so bad and you keeping well wrapped up.

I feel sorry for poor Mr. B. Did you give him a chance to put his clothes on first before frogmarching the poor man to the marina office? Poor Mr. B !
