Just read the navtex test in this month's PBO. It stated that ICS are planning to remove the additional whip from the aerial. Would this mean I can get away with mounting the aerial without the whip? This would make it possible to place the aerial under the sprayhood, out of harm's way. Anyone got any idea's about this?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Surely one thin (aluminium) bar passing over the aerial won't cause too much disturbance, or will it?

It is very hard to predict the affect of metal objects in the vicinity of antenna, which is why they always tend to be placed clear of obstructions. Incidentally many antenna are made of aluminium. Under your spray hood I would expect there would be headings on which there would be no affect and others on which you would get very poor reception. My advice would be don't do it. My credentials are that I retired from the radio industry a couple of years back as a project manager for big systems and getting antenna systems right was always a major headache.
