Good morning

I have an icom ic-m505 fixed dsc radio and looking for a bit of advice.

The unit has worked well for many years but on the first sail of the season yesterday revealed a problem. It transmits as clear as a bell from both the base station and the separate command mike but I cannot hear any replies. The speakers seem to be working as they are noisy when adjusting the squelch.

It feels like an internal fault but it was working perfectly before the boat was laid up at the end of last year.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am based in Essex.

I sent my Icom-505 back to Icom as I had the same issue. They fixed if for free as there are a set of filters that fail. A number of radios were fitted with a bad batch but it's not on a recall, they just fix them when they go wrong. I thought I was going to have to pay given the age of the radio. Btw does anyone have a decent working HM-182E commandmic for the 505 they want to get rid of? Looking for one.

Thanks very much for that info. The forum triumps again

Common problem, ceramic RX filter.
Ring them first and explain the problem
they have been very very helpful in the past .

Try that with any of the other importers of marine kit on a 10 or 20 year old radio ..............Do let us know how you get on. :)

A quick update to this thread.

First thanks to all the people who took the time to reply. I sent the radio to Icom and they confirmed it was the ceramic filters.

Icom's service has been superb. The radio was with them Monday and I received a call today confirming it was fixed free of charge and is on it's way back to me.

For a big company the personal service (a particular mention here for Geoff) has been superb. On this experience (and not just because it was repaired free of charge) Icom have a customer for life.
