Just started researching fitting this.

Can an Icom 802 be fitted legally in the UK (E.U.) I have one that I intend to install but was looking at Sailcoms web site. they say cannot be used in EU (but looks like they sell them) but do I run the risk if I fit it but leave it powered down till out of eu waters so fitted but not used???

Is it just some different channels that are opened or not on the 802 or do I have a duff model and should have bought the 801.

If I do go ahead and install it, it will be later this year so I have time to investigate the aerial set up I would really rather not cut the back stay is there any better ways.

Thanks

The 802 does not have CE Marking. I do not know why, it might be because it has more frequencies, but most people would update their radio firmware anyway to get more frequencies.

I believe that checks are carried out more on commercial vessels. Leisure vessels might be checked if they become a nuisance, therefore personally I would not care too much.

As per above advice. Get whatever is cheaper. Also, there are always a few available second hand. Especially if you go for the m710.

SSB HF antenna

IMHO the stern mounted fibreglass whip antenna is best. Not necessarily the best performance but hopefully remaining usable in a dismasting. Do get your earthing right for the ant tuner short and positive.
good luck olewill

Bob Smith at Sailcom will program in the commonly used channels for you for a modest fee.
Whilst it is illegal I don't know of anyone ever being inspected and prosecuted for fitting an M802. This may explain why they are happily sold in the UK.
For what it's worth I had an M802 but sold it a couple of years later and bought the M801E.
The M801E is worth the extra in my opinion. The case and its waterproofing is so much better than the M801. The M801 was starting to show corrosion issues with the case. They are very different radios. Most people without seeing the two radios would expect them to be a rebadging with minor mods. It really isn't.
