Hi
Have purchased a new icon 411 vhf and would like to interface with my garmin 128 gps to use dsc facility. Old radio had 2 wires making it easy to connect to 2 nmea wires of the garmin. However the icom has one very short thin wire with the inner core one connection and the outer fibers (similar to coaxial screen) the other. Would like simple way to connect so I can disconnect with ease at end of season. Not great at soldering but if needs be will give it a try if needs be.

Thankyou

John

Interesting, yes I've been meaning to ask exactly the same question, about that ultra small coaxial on my new and as yet not instaled ICOM, it would be good if there was some sort of connector to wire it into.

I'll be wiring in a feed from an old but functional Garmin GPS120XL

All i know so far is from the ICOM manual: the outer conductor is NMEA (-), the inner conductor is NMEA (+).

There must be an 'official' connector fitting - surely?

I suspect this might be part of the answer

This forum posting has some useful stuff, directly relating exactly to the setup I am to implement: http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29487

I have to say it does not sound easy, struggle to comprehend how ICOM didn't put a proper fitting on the end of the coaxial.

As for connectors the above forum thread mentions:

2-pin Molex connector (whatever that might be)

or a link to this: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/CON-242/2-PIN-CONNECTOR-W/HEADER-.10-/-/1.html

Apparently ICOM have in the past suggested that RCA Phono Plug and RCA Phono Socket are appropriate for making these connections

They certainly are ...

I've used telephone sockets and plugs for expandable NMEA network, domestic cable boxes with RS232 sockets fitted to .... mate of mine has RCA phono sockets on a panel ...

Nothing hard about NMEA really ! ;)

Telephone socket box even supplying 12v as well as NMEA ....

Now I have a test panel on board with RCA phonos to distribute music to Multimedia speakers, RS232 input - feeds DSC radio and output NMEA for another plotter, repeater or PC etc.

The other meter on the panel is a Voltmeter that via a 1-0-2 flick switch shows voltage of each battery. Below that is a 1-0-2 switch that is now marked with label ... controls my auto-bilge pump with manual over-ride or full off. Just in case anyone wants to know ...

A short time spent in Maplins or similar establishment soon shows up a load of ways to connect what-ever you want to do. And at far less cost than "Marine" labeled .... :)

get a 3.5mm stereo plug, male and female, and connect them to the icom and gps, and easily unpluggable when needed to take home for winter etc...

the 411 will work with the 128 as i have sorted one out for a friend who was having problems getting it to talk to each other...

remember to go into the comms settings ...
