Used to be that you bought a block of ICE (Frozen water BTW) from the cooler at the petrol station, or the fishmongers, (Or that fishmongers/deli/wine place in fowey...), or the marina, and bunged it in the coolbox and you had 48-72 hours of cool drinks.... now you have to purchase a suitcase generator from someplace in Japan... or come up with some clever wiring thing like Refueller did, or run the engine an hour a day to keep the batteries up.....

Why doesnt anyone do block Ice anymore?? I have trolled up and down the west country and you used to be able to get block Ice, but I cant find anyplace anymore.....

Block ice or tablet ice? I've always found that block ice lasts several days, but tablet ice melts quite quickly. And most of the dispensers only give tablet ice.

That is correct. Ice cubes will melt faster than a large block. The reason for this is down to physics. Heat transfer between beers and ice happens by conduction or, more likely, convection. For the same weight of ice, ice cubes have a larger surface area and hence heat transfer happens more quickly. In other words, ice cubes will cool your beers faster.

Added advantage is that you can also just drop one or two into your G&T without having to get out an ice pick.

Seems many places and that includes camp sites have opted to 'freeze' freezer packs for you instead ! Great if you are staying for a day at least to get them frozen hard.

My question following on from this .... how many actually use the ice-box built into many boats as an Ice-box ?

But you can get ice at almost any supermarket for maybe £1 a kilo. My fridge runs on it. A 1kg bag will last a couple of days; 2kg will still be part solid at 4 days out. I have never considered changing to an electric fridge on the boat. Actually I think that's £1 for 2kg.

Me! Room for 24 cans of tonsil juice and a bucket full of ice thrown in does the trick!

One of the advantages of cruising in France is that folks on the fish market seem quite happy to fill a carrier bag full of ice of free. Offers to pay are greeted with something like "Charge? There is no charge. It's ice!" (only in French, of course, it being France...)

Ive got a big freezer in the garage, I do as they do in Greece, I put bottles of water in it, then when going on a trip, I ake em down to the boat to give the fridge a start, when they melt we drink the water!

Here in Azerbaijan we still have an Ice block processing plant.
It is just opposite the port,... Ahhh I wonder why!!
Obviously some ships in the Caspian still rely on large Ice blocks.
We found the place after being tasked by our boss to find a method of keeping the beer cool for a big BBQ party.
We bought a couple of old tin bathtubs (yep can still find them here too) and a chunk of Ice that would just fit in the back of a Land Cruiser. Had cold beer for saturdays BBQ and and more cold beer for Sundays BBQ, Boss slightly over ordered on the food and drinks, so we just invited every one back again next day.

we do too... great idea. 4 bottles last nearly a week.

The supermarket in our port freezes unopened 1.5 Litre mineral water bottles. We use them in the cooler and when they thaw, we drink them.

They are sold at the normal water price, the supermarket using them to attract yacht custom.

On my first visit to Rosslare a nearby fishing boat gave us ice for free.

The tugboat gave us free diesel " What is 20 litres when we have 40 tons on board?"

In the Scilly Isles I paid for water /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. The only place I have ever had to pay for it. And that takes into account some arid Mediterranean Islands.
