Ice maker

We have one of these on Bigwow http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/hostess-ice-maker We chose it because it's all front opening and access, so fits under a shelf. Only downside is we have found we drink more.:encouragement:

"Nerd Alert"

This is interesting, "Make ice easily and quickly with this Ice Maker. Make up to 700g of ice with a 2 litre water reservoir - no plumbing required.", now where did the other 1.3kg of water go? Or should it read "Make ice easily and quickly with this Ice Maker. Make up to 700g of ice 3 times from the 2 litre water reservoir - no plumbing required.

Sorry, prob just messy copywriting.

I bought two of these one for home and one for the boat works great and they also sell on Amazon, has a 2 year warranty, first ice out in around 10 mins and around every 10 mins it makes a new batch, very very pleased with them.

I am interested in getting one of these, but I don't know how much current it draws. Any chance you could have a look at the label and post the wattage?

Thanks.

Now there's a story about these that I'll share.
Boat in our marina has one - great ice maker by the way.
He fitted it on his flybridge in a cupboard and wired it to the BBQ

He spent days wondering why it only ran intermittently.
Then the penny dropped - it only made ice when the BBQ lid was raised!!!
You can see where the mistake was - it was wired into the BBQ lid interlock!!

We are all now wondering what happens on his boat when he flushes the toilet!!

I seem to remember a photo surfacing..cables,pontoons,water..well if you couldnt smell toast there was a fair chance that you might smell frying meat ;)Of course that was still at the time the deck of his boat was still proudly 75cm above the waterline... before the ..ahhh.additional equipment arrived... Port Solent Superstore had less chandlery...

They take about 150 watts at 240 volts so you'll need a small inverter. We've had them on board since they were first introduced and it's always fun to see how impressed everyone is with the ice bucket full of ice and a nice bottle in the middle!

Excellent, thanks. We only have a 300W inverter, so we should be ok (as long as we don't leave it on too long!).

As funny as that is Hurry (it did make me chuckle), someone that's able to do that is more than likely unable to assess the load on an electrical system and before you know it there another Squeeker on fire...

Hi Pinnacle
Label says 0.7amp which my grey matter says around 168 watts, do a search on amazon for Andrew James and they a very well respected brand who are local to me and also trade on ebay under the link I posted which is slightly cheaper, the customer service is great and loads of there products are recommended in the good house keeping magazine.

Thanks very much for the info. I plan to give it a go.......if the 300W inverter wont handle it, then I guess it will trip out!

Just a word of a warning on icemakers. A few years ago, SWMBO and I got sick on our boat and the only thing we could trace it to was the icemaker, even though we used only bottled water in it. On inspection we saw that many of the ice cubes had bits of green mould in them. Now whenever we come back to the boat after an extended period away, we always make at least 2 tanks full of ice and discard it before using any. When you leave the boat, even if you empty the icemaker, there will be some water left in it which can go mouldy over several weeks out of operation. Yup, otherwise, they are wonderful things and I'm just about to sink a G & T right now with fresh ice from our icemaker in it;)

I put a squirt of lemon juice in the water to help beat the mold, however a complete empty and was out every 3 weeks, as the residual water did look a little mucky. Probably bits of lemon. well trying to convince my self that is what it was.

Bit of a coincidence seeing this thread just after I bought this Isotherm / Webasto Ice Maker on eBay for £116 (it's the clear ice one):

I <think> it's a bit of a bargain as it's new/unused, but I couldn't find a UK price online in time to know for sure. Anyone who knows anything about them, do jump in ! All I have to do now is decide where to fit it… (unless others think it should go straight back on eBay :nonchalance:

I've got a better idea
Make the Ice from the Gin
That will keep the bugs away.
Then, all you need is tonic!!!

Actually, thinking about it the Gin probably wouldn't freeze
My first thought, though, was how would I pipe the Gin into the icemaker.
Quickly resolved that issue due to the ridiculously low cost of Gin in Spain.

Some of the countertop models have a drain at the back, which is a useful feature. I have a bit of tubing attached which reaches the sink, so when we leave the boat I can easily drain the tank water and leave the ice drawer open so it dries completely, which avoids the mould problem

That's an inspired idea Mike, not only does it solve the mould issue, but you can also make a self replenishing G&T. Fill a pint glass with gin ice, then keep adding tonic and you'll have a drink that will last in the sun without getting weaker as the ice melts. I'm definitely going to try this! As you say, the problem might be getting the gin to freeze with a weedy ice maker, though I think it'll work fine in the -26 deg freezer at home.
