ICC Qualification

Just out of interest has anybody ever failed to obtain this?

Perhaps one of our RYA training organisations could give us any statistics of passes/failures

The ICC in it's own right is not actually a qualification. it is a certificate of competence that says you have completed a level of training. If you "pass" powerboat Level 2 you can apply for the ICC up to 10 metres and if Day Skipper than you can apply for the 24 meter version. You can do an ICC up to 24 meters as a standalone over 3 days. You can also undertake as direct assessment if you think you have the knowledge. If you are new to boating then it is better to an appropriate RYA course, get the qualification and then apply for the ICC on the back of it.

Thanks Solitaire, for friends that have shown interest in boating on the sea I have always recommended that they sooner rather than later do their powerboat level 2 /ICC as a minimum as I found it very worthwhile. One friend the other day jokingly said that he always fails exams. So I was interested in the failure ratios.

So what is the failure rate /ratios of PB 2 ?

I am sure that if people trained with you there would be no failures as you are such a great instructor..... but for this question I will not accept that as a reply :)

The word "failure" is not really relevant as far as the Level 2 is concerned, it is an assessed course which is designed to teach basic boat handling in preparation for the user to then go off and put everything into practice. In the 10 years + I have been teaching Level 2 I can count on one hand the people I have asked to come back and perhaps consider another day's training. I did have a situation a couple of years ago with some overseas students who really had not got a clue, but we are not at this level looking to fail people. The Advanced course is a whole different scenario as the base skills have to be honed and I have failed people at this level and as there is now a certificate of competence exam, there are failures at this level.

Powerboat Level 2 cannot turn new boaters into expert handlers in two days. It is there to teach the basic techniques upon which to build and practice. Saying that, if in my opinion, I felt somebody was unsafe then that is a different situation altogether. I have on a couple of occasions even pulled in another instructor as maybe I was not explaining things well enough or the student did not understand me!
