ICC in France - or French equivalent

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain an ICC in France, or if there is a French equivalent?

An ICC for a UK citizen is issued by the RYA. You can be tested for it at many RYA centres outside the UK. Long thread on the liveaboard forum recently on the subject.

Suggest you contact thr RYA for details

I might stand to be corrected on this but I think the Permis Bateau - Côtière (up to 6km from the coast) and Hauturière (no limit) is the equivalent.

Not exactly within the spirit of the EU to restrict nationalities to doing business with specific companies is it?

I wonder if that could be challenged in EU law...

Permis Bateau is the equivalent. Allows you to use a motorboat with an engine over (I think) 5hp. As you can't really use the sails to do the rivers/canals your yacht then is treated as a motorboat. You need a PB with CEVNI or ICC with CEVNI.

Otherwise you don't need any qualifications for your yacht, unless as a motorsailor the engine output is greater than the "puissance" developed by the sails. McGregor 25 comes to mind.

Permis Cotiere. Like coastal Skipper, Permis Hauturiere like Yachmaster. There is no "equivalence", but you don't need them anyway.

Thanks. Any idea what is involved in getting the permis hauturiere? I don't really want to get anything, but I am starting to feel the need with all of the posts about getting an ICC. My boat will be based in France so I thought that was the sensible place to get something.

France is not a signatory to UN Resolution 40, so does not require an ICC if your boat is UK registered unless you venture into the inland waterways when you need a CEVNI - which comes with the ICC plus the additional written test.

Far and away the easiest way to comply is to do the RYA test if you do not already have a qualifying RYA qualification.

If it's a sailing boat then you need nothing unless you go on to inland waterways.

The inland waterways test consists of 25 multiple choice questions ( max 4 errors allowed) and 3 hrs of practical training. This can dispensed with if you have some other recognized boat handling qualificationn. The "bateau école" can then validate your skills thus allowing you to get your license.


"Pour la conduite de bateau de plaisance à moteur dont la puissance est supérieure à 6 CV (4,5kw) et la longueur limitée à 20 mètres. L'âge requis est de 16 ans. NOTE: c'est ce permis qui est généralement enseigné dans les Bateaux-Ecoles.

Pour l'obtenir il faut réussir à un examen théorique comprenant 25 QCMs (Questions à Choix Multiples). La durée de l'épreuve est de 30 mn. Il peut y avoir plusieurs bonnes réponses possibles à une question QCM. Quatre erreurs maximum sont admises pour réussir à l'examen. Ensuite, aprés une formation pratique au pilotage (3h), l'établissement de formation (Bateau-Ecole agréé) valide vos acquis. Le permis fluvial vous est delivré ensuite. NOTE: les titulaires du permis mer côtier sont dispensés de la formation pratique au pilotage.

- Contenu formation théorique: Connaissances générales de la navigation intérieure, Balisage, Signalisation visuelle et sonore, règles de circulation, Signalisation et Marques des bateaux, fonctionnement des Ecluses, équipements de Sécurité, etc...

- Formation pratique: appareillage, navigation au compas, tenir un cap, sauvetage d'un homme à la mer, prise de coffre, accostage, etc..

unless you want to sail professionally with paying passengers in which case there are additional exams to take.
