Where's the cheapest place to take a ICC and Cevni qualification? I feel that I dont need to be trained but I need the piece of paper.

Join the RYA, get an instructor to give you a dazed kipper assessment ( not the training just the course if you are that confident) RYA will issue certificates.

Of course trying to get an examiner to test you without having done a course might be a challenge. If you do manage it I would like the name of the examiner so that I can put together an instructors qualification!

Sunsail at Port Solent advertise a one day ICC assessment (sail) for about £100, which is probably a good benchmark.

Day Skipper practical is not an assessment, it is a 5 day course, so you will not find an examiner for that.

You should be able to find a CEVNI assessment for Inland ICC for £20.

I am afraid there is no such thing. The Dayskipper Certificate is the result of a 5 (or more) day course, there is no short cut, direct assessment or exam.

There is however a direct assessment for the ICC practical, only takes a couple of hours if you don't need any training. Prices vary depending upon if you want to do it on your own boat or a school boat. We do CEVNI Assessment for £20, its basically a multiple choice paper.

As already said join the RYA if you are not already a member, certification is then free.

If Southampton is any good to you email me at the address below for dates, details and price

My apologiess, I went straight for YM. If you have the skills get a YM offshore exam and get a YM and an ICC. Alternatively take up
stormforces offer. Last year I contacted about 8 schools on the South Coast. NONE of them would offer me ICC assesment without doing the 5 day course and the hard sell was up front.

Pity stormforce won't run an instructors course over consecutive weekends, not all of us can take a week off!

We will run a course anytime if there is demand. Happy to schedule one over two consecutive weekends (a two day and a three day weekend) however i cant offer the guarantee of not canceling due to low numbers (that we put on most of our courses).

If we can find some others interested we will do it. Best to email me with outline of window of opportunity.

Some clubs have an member/examiner who can do ICC and CEVNI tests. I am lucky, mine does.

I can't remember how much it cost, but I think about £10 and a pint of Guinness (optional I believe, but supplied gladly in my case). Certainly nowhere near £100.

Of course this does depend on the goodwill of the relevant club member.

As I understand it the CEVNI is an endorsement on the ICC so you'll need that first. A fun way to get the ICC without taking a week off work is the 2 day powerboat RYA level 2 course.

A weekend zooming around in a high powered RIB is worth the £200 purely in entertainment value.

.....so does that give you exactly the same ticket as one taken on a displacement yacht or boat?

I'm not sure but either will give you an ICC to which you can attach a CEVNI endorsement for European inland waters. I got my ICC on completion of the Day Skipper course and it says it's good for power boats up to 10m and sail boats up to 24m.

The RYA website is incomprehensible when it comes to courses and certificates.

The PB 2 will allow you to apply for an ICC up to 10 meters power only. It does not give the option of an ICC sail.

I was in the same situation, Talulah of this Parish based in Gosport examined me on my own yacht just before Christmas. I dont know if he also examines CEVNI.
Despite having sailed for 40 years and about 30,000 miles in the two hours we were out I quickly realised I didn't know as much as I thought I did.

I'll sign up for a YM intensive course in the Spring.

ICC Clarifictaion

There are 4 categories of ICC

• Power up to 10m
• Power up to 24m
• Sail up to 24m
• PWC

I know its obvious but you have to take the test in the relevant boat i.e. for the power 24m must be in a power boat between 10.01 and 24m etc.

There are also 2 area options

• Coastal
• Inland

In order to receive the Inland endorsement you need to also take the CEVNI test.

Inland centers can only provide the inland ICC, Coastal centers can do both.

Alternatively if you hold the relevant certificate form the RYA scheme you can be awarded an ICC without further assessment.

• RYA Powerboat L2 or higher = ICC pwr 10m
• Any RYA motor cruising ticket = ICC pwr 24m
• RYA Dayskipper Sail or higher sail cruising ticket or RYA Dinghy Instructor = ICC Sail 24m
• RYA PWC Proficiency = ICC PWC
