its off to work we go...

Anyone else remember the tiny "speed" boats rented out in Salcombe about 50 years ago? They had tiny inboard engines, maybe Stuart Turner 1 1/2 HP, decked in foredecks and afterdecks and a steering wheel in front of a bench seat. There must have been seven of them. Horrible ugly little things. Never saw a Snow White to go with them though.

There used to be similar on West Kirby Lake..

And Hove Lagoon...

But are they now old enough to be cherished classic boats regardless?

Only if they dodged the firelighters... The ones I remember must have been made of plywood. I think they had a tiny pram bow, bit like a Solo. They were also incredibly heavy for their size. Once beached on a falling tide they were impossible to get off. The rudder got stuck in the sand, and couldn't be lifted off its pintles, and that was that.

Horrifying to think they were replicated or on tour elsewhere. They must have done about 3 1/2 knots flat out. Probably a full knot slower than a conventional clinker launch with the same engine. I wonder ... could they have been to blame for the subsequent burgeoning of the English power boat industry ... having set the bar so low, so obvious that anyone could build something better. After all Sunseeker, Fairline etc must have had something in their sights to beat when they started out.

(or was Hitler to blame?)

Reminds me, now you've got a Solo, you've got to come to Salcombe for the Yacht Club Regatta. One of the largest Solo fleets there, the racing is basically a cruise around various buoys in the estuary (none of your olympic standard courses here), and there's one race a day which gives plenty of time for bucket & spading, boozing, whatever takes your fancy.

Lots of other class and handicap racing, and of course the Salcombe Yawls.

Always though Tony Blair needed a Moustache ;)
