20 January, 2018. Man dies after Volvo Ocean Race yacht hits mainland Chinese fishing boat near Hong Kong

Nine others were being treated after they were pulled from the sea.

The vessel of American-Danish team Vestas 11th Hour Racing hit the mainland fishing boat at about 2am. The latter sank and 10 fishermen fell into the sea, the organisers of the Volvo Ocean Race confirmed.

Marine police and other emergency services launched a rescue mission after the yacht’s crew sent a distress signal. The fishermen were picked up to the east of Waglan Island.
 
5 people a day die on our roads, god knows how many in China or the US. Important to us as sailors and to the mans family but in the grand scheme of things it isnt news worthy.
 
Sailing is a minority sport and there is no UK interest - the UK media are hopeless at reporting any news. If a celebrity has a cold well that is different.

Good to see the BBC are reporting it.

No Brits involved in the Race perhaps.
 
the cynic in me says 'rich westerners engaged in sporting pursuit accidentally kill chinese peasant fisherman who got in the way' is not news for most western outlets

Your assumption not true.
A feature of these races is the multi-national nature of all the teams.
Brits have always been in the forefront of these campaigns, now and in the previous races.
But perhaps if the media could find a football connection it would became major news?
 
The Sanchi tanker disaster off Shanghai only got reported when it became an environmental problem a week later, despite the 32 crew being lost.

This has been reported in the news but, like all reporting, it depends on where you look for your news. The BBC had it but maybe the Sun and Mirror missed it?
 
I was surprised this was not picked up on scuttlebut when it happened....fatal sailing incidents usually evoke some response.

From the picture I have seen of the Volvo boat involved, the hole in the side of it looks like it was tboned by the fishing boat and not vice Versa

I'm sure it'll all come it in due course, very sad for all involved
 
We were 'T' boned by a yacht on the China Coast Cup, our yacht was a write off. We were on starboard, on the start line. We were holed at toerail, delamination of the hull, cabin roof damaged, windows stove in . No-one was hurt. During the protest the offending yacht skipper was chastised, with some incredulity, for not stopping (not even to enquire of injuries or damage). There is no penalty for not stopping. The insurance payout, in full, came from the insurance of the offending yacht.

It happens.

edit - this is not to suggest, at all, that a Volvo skipper would have the same cavalier attitude - I had already read the report and knew the Volvo yacht had stopped to offer assistance (as had following Volvo yachts. It will be interesting to read how, why it happened.
