I wish the Japanese were boating mad and sailing was the most popular sport in Japan because if they were then.....
I would be able to get at a reasonable price a single screen mounted above the companionway that would multi display radar, gps, log, depth, forward depth, windspeed and direction,also chartplotter. It would also incorporate the VHF/DSC radio, EPIRB, AIS and Navtex
There would be a repeater at the chart table for all this. It would all be wireless so no cables to thread or holes in the boat. As a single piece of kit there would be no interface problems.
It would all be utterly reliable with no moving parts, all solid state, no log impellors or spinning egg cups at the mast. There would be one aerial and one Radome.
All the technology exists, why cant someone drag it all together into one black box and a viewable in all conditions flat screen.
Or do we just have to hope the Japanese take up sailing big time.

I bet B&G, Raymarine etc. are working on it, but they are waiting for us to buy up all the stand-alone gear first. Then come the ads for the all singing/dancing itergrated units.
As a retired Northsea helicopter pilot I can advise that everything on one screen is bad news when the screen goes black, on a dark night, in the middle of nowhere. To cater for this, they'll be selling stand-alone back-ups Hoskins!

So do I, but for different reasons.

There is a growing trade over here for "old Japanese cars", cos where they come from they have such strict rules about maintenance and limiting their use, consequently they have little usage compared with their UK counterparts, and come here in near perfect nick and at low prices.


So if they do go for boats, in a few years time might there be a flood of well equipped and cheap yachts?

You can already have solid state sensors for wind and speed - from a British company Echopilot. And from personal experience of their other instruments, these will be good quality.

Unfortunately, for some reason, these designs will be largely unknown until some importer brings in a foreign equivalent.

I suspect that you can probably have what you want at the moment, but to get it you will need an electronics whiz kid , a pc, and a bit of dosh. Try it and let us know how you get on.

I think you can everything on one screen here- Locomarine Computers- www.witteymarine.com but I don't think it can be cockpit mounted. And it ain't cheap.

Yes I am sure there are electronic/computer whizz kids that could design a one off custom made bespoke piece of kit.
But thats exactly the point I was trying to make. What I was dreaming about was a mass produced job with the benefits of reliability, price and integration.
Assuming I had the money( which I haven't !) and was prepared to take the risk of a one off bespoke solution then I dont have the electronic/ computer knowledge to even draw up the spec.
