reading as one does. The literature in question this time was "The Trouble with Des", which sits on a shelf within easy reach along with other publications like Good Housekeeping, which funnily enough I don't indulge in. What an absolute scream. When was the last time any of you had to wipe away the tears when reading an article in YM or any of the yotty press come to think of it ? Can you remember ? I can't. It's all po faced seriousness nowadays, with articles abounding about safety this and that, dramas at sea, more bloody safety, yotty writers on jollies abroad etc. I'm seriuosly thinking about stopping them all as I've realised that I'm reading less and less of the articles. If any of you are fairly new to yotty mags, buy some Des and see how it used to be. And weep ! Anyways back to the business in hand. Now where's the paper. Gordon Bennet we're out of it. Oh well where's that Good Housekeeping.

Absolutely. The good news for us is that HWMBO collects saily mags so we have YM etc going back decades - a great source of Des. The bad news is that the house is a bit like that Mike Peyton cartoon with the bed perched on 4ft of mags !

But why are we all subjected to Nana Yachting ? How about some eccentric boating instead ?

Mayhap that the funny stuff would no longer be PC for a variety of reasons. To relate errors and mishaps that either were or could have been dangerous or injurious in a comedic tone (without reporting the incidents to the MCA) could lead to accusations of unprofessional seamanship. God knows I have admitted doing certain things which involved some risk element, and the Judges and Jury members of certain sectors of the forum have berated me (and many others) for behaving recklessly, shouldnt be allowed, wouldn't go to sea in that, without the essential kit, write to the Times etc. The bit that brings it all together is the hook, where the confession/tale leads to the lesson known but reimpressed.
May well be something to do with the size of the investment these days, who knows?
I for one always read the sages, and still enjoy those that do write good tales with wrinkly wit.
