"Go sailing" he said.
"You'll love it" he said.
"Go to Greece and sail" he said.
So we did.
The first day's briefing went something like this :-
LEADER. You have a 27 h.p. engine.
ME. 27h.p.!! That'll never get me up on the plane. What happened to the other 800 h.p.?
LEADER. This is a bit different, sir. Propulsion is by wind, supplied free of charge by Him above.
ME. You mean there is a guy up on the flybridge with a fan?
LEADER. Not quite, sir. Let me explain. These are the sheets.....
ME. Sheets, I'll never sleep in these. But, if we're talking bondage ....
SWMBO. Don't even think about it.
ME. These white flappy things look more like sheets. But who thought of hanging the hammocks vertical? Novel.
LEADER. We will all meet up 10 miles down the coast later this afternoon.
ME. 10 miles? That's only 25 minutes away, isn't it.
LEADER. Don't worry, sir. You'll soon get the hang of it. OK. Let's go.
So we did.
Leaving Fiskado on Kaphalonia we headed south.
Good game getting used to this leaning over bit. Using the heads at this angle was a bit of a challenge. The aide memoire in red was useful. Saved using the gloves with L and R on them.
Must confess to using the engine for port entry and exit.
Entry to Ithica.
Saw some interesting vessels on the way.
This is a "bang" isn't it.
SWMBO. No dear, it's a boom.
( I was close!! )
SWMBO. We ended up calling it a bang, based on the number of times he hit his head on it.
It amazed me how deep the water is - right up to the shore. It was 100 metres deep to within a few metres of the hard bits. Imagine anchoring this close to the Needles for a swim and some lunch. There must be an advantage not having any tides or wind.
Some stunning scenery on the way up past Nikos to Meganissi
The local fishing boats manage to catch some interesting species - includind swordfish.
Funny how we always managed to moor right opposite the local tavern every night!
It was so hot over the time we were there that even I got myself wet. And for me to get into the briney, without a wet suit, it must have been very hot.
By the end of the holiday we couldn't get enough white flappy stuff up the big stick. So I hung a pair of SWMBO's bloomers off the pulpit. Next thing I knew we WERE up on the plane. Final lunch before heading back was at a place called O FOKI. No comment!
So that was our venture to the dark side.
Was Wiggo right? You bet.
Would I do it again? It's already booked for next year.
Thanks Wiggo.
