I saw a rerun of the film Deep Impact on TV the other day which illustrated how a wave heaps up in shallow water.

Were you anchored in shallow water, (which been a Cat would be a natural thing to do)?

To be fair not really. We were on the pool on the south side of the pier, it was around low water so I think it would have been around 20ft or so, a local might correct me, I did not take too much notice of the sounder, only noting depths from time to time during the first ebb to see how much water I could expect.
