I taught the Clove Hitch

I taught the Clove Hitch to a group of of 12 people. None of them, except one, could tie anything but granny/slip knots.

The Class Tutor did two loops and crossed them over I explained that was no F in use generally and got a post to demonstrate the Clove Hitch concept.

The better knot is the Round Turn and two half uckets. Most people can tie it. It's the right knot for things like moorings, fenders and lee-cloths.

I agree, but I often get the hitches the wrong way round.

They have different uses. A clove hitch is just that, a temporary hitch which can be adjusted. OK for throwing over a bollard in a lock, or tying a fender line onto a rail if you wish, but useless as a permanent tie without another half hitch. My preferred way of tying t is the crossed-hands method, which takes 0.75 secs ish.

Err, the 'clove hitch' eh, very useful and adaptable hitch, can be used for many reasons afloat and when leaving the dinghy, esp if also making a hitch over standing part
