I see Pantaenius are at it again

One disincentive to changing insurer is the demand for a survey. Not all insurers make such demands of new customers but paying out around a year's premium to then save a few quid doesn't make much sense. Of course, if your present insurer should require a survey then ..............................................

Interesting comments from Down West on cancellations around renewal time- For all classes of insurance insurers must bring to the clients attention conditions on auto renewal.
Make certain you DO NOT accept they can do so.
Never pay DD use a credit card with zero interest pay your premium over 10 payments and then cut up card and wait for next offer.
I have emailed all my insurers on auto renewal to stop such action and requested confirmation they have altered system.
For ghostlymorron once you have your renewal terms and that insurer has an on line click and buy check on line current premiums it often pays to take up a new offer from same insurer.
Beat them at own tricks

We are with y the policy was up a bit but not huge and well priced, we’ve decided against a launch this year as reduced season makes it more hassle than it’s worth and the lockdown has put hold to some big jobs which we won’t have time to finish after lockdown as it’s back to work for the considerable future, I’ve asked if we can reduce cover to suit yard only sol awaiting a reply

My boat isn't worth very much by the standards of most on here, but I have had the insurance with SAGA for 14 years and they havn't put the premium up for the last five. I've just paid this years and its the same as last years. And I had a claim in 2011 that was about £1200 which they were very good about.
The only beef I had with them was right at the start. They wanted a survey done...so I had a survey, sent it in and was told "Oh you don't need a survey for a vessel under £xxx in value"...but other than that. I do just have inshore and coastal cover which is all I do anyway.

If a survey is reasonably recent, a new insurer will often accept that, so no need for another.

This sounds very sketchy from a competition law perspective. Anyone thought of complaining to the CMA?

Y have just quoted me 40% more for TP, out of commission in a marina than I paid for fully comp, UK to La Rochelle 5 years ago.

Pants have an operation here in Australia.

We swapped from our old insurer about 3 years ago and switched to Pants. Our original insurer was becoming expensive and Pants were cheaper. Pants did ask for a survey which we though was reasonable. The survey was conducted professionally and did not turn up anything untoward. The survey was accepted by Pants without comment. Our catamaran was then about 17 years old and the survey was reassuring to us.

This year the costs with Pants rose - we queried and they said that (my interpretation) due to increase losses, various cyclones, all costs were rising. However Pants advised that at the next renewal, next January, we would need to have a new survey. We are no longer insured with Pants. Surveys are expensive and we could see no justification for a new survey - given that we have had only one survey in 20 years.

I insured expensively with Pants for 1 year, they then hiked the price up significantly so I didn't bother renewing. I cannot for the life of me imagine why you'd insure 3rd party only with them. The bean counters know their trade though & will have worked out that so many people just renew cos they can't be arsed shopping around or don't need to worry about a price hike or whatever and remember they've got all that sponsorship of the likes of Skip Fekking Novak, etc. to think about haven't they so come on guys get behind Pants and renew your policies and if you don't already insure with them YOU SHOULD cos they need the money!

What's your beef with Skip Novak?
