the course i had planned to do turned out to be the dayskipper practical , its my fault because thats what i asked for in the begining , so i am desperate to find a good icc course in mallorca in oct , the reason i need icc is because my wife wants to do it and she is taiwanese , icc is available for foriegn nationals whos country is not part of some un agreement .anyway the cost for the dayskipper turned out to be almost 1k euro per day +fuel , i have email some schools about the icc , there prices seem much more reasonable at 900euro each for the whole course +fuel but no replys yet and i want to put this to bed so i can book my flights . so anyone doing a course or know of anyone doing a course please let me know ....pm me if you dont want to talk on open forum .

many thanks
david

Does it need to be in Mallorca?

Definitely pricey compared to say France.

I didnt know that DS was only available to UK nationals --- if it is then why not do the DS as that gets you the piece of paper (ICC) anyway?

It's the same course - about 4 days. So do the course together and you get Dayskip AND ICC certif, while your wife only gets ICC (if she is not allowed Dayskip, which doesn't sound right to me...)

In principle you are right, but in reality to do Day Skipper practical the participants should have done or have knowledge too Day Skipper shore based level. There is nothing to stop anybody doing the RYA course and gaining the certificate. However it is only nationals of EU countries (or to be totally accurate UNECE countries) that cannot be issued with a UK ICC. But I qualify that by saying if they live permanently in the UK then they can. I hope that makes sence!

The regulations changed regarding issueing of UK ICCs. UK can now issue ICCs for USA, Canadian and non UNECE contries. Taiwan falls into that category.

I am also assuming that the OP is either a UK national or has permanent residency in the UK.

Oh, I should add that if the Day Skipper is done in the Med then it will be endorsed non-tidal.

PB2 will get you ICC, think you might have to join the RYA to qualify?

£1000 would get you Day Skipper Theory & Practical in the UK, not sure about Spanish prices?

PB2 will only enable the issue of an ICC up to 10 meters. There is no requirement to join the RYA to get an ICC, just pay £40. If you do join the RYA then the issue of the ICC is then free.

The important thing to remember is that the ICC is not a qualification in its own right, it is simply a governmental statement that the individual citizen is competent to the level required. This competence is demonstrated by either certificated learning at the level of Day Skipper, or by presenting a combination of experience and a practical test at that level. Until this year, governments could only issue the certificate to their own citizens, but as Solitaire says this has recently been modified to allow the UK (through the RYA0 to issue to residents, reflecting the large number of foreign people resident in the UK many of whom get their training from the RYA scheme.

Thanks for explaining the position correctly, I am a uk citizen so no problem she is Taiwanese we both live in Taiwan so no uk address, the icc course is the one we need for the med anyway, it's only depending on which website you look at 2 to 3days and half the cost .also I want to do it in the med because we have boats to view there and will be incorporating it into a family holiday.

Thanks
David

Ok, then there is no problem with either of you doing the ICC. The ICC for vessels up to 24 meters is normally a 3 day affair although it can be done via an assessment by answering a range of questions and knowing how to work a course to steer. The PB2 course done over 2 days will make the holder eligible for an ICC up to 10 meters.

I guess you have already looked on the RYA web site for schools in the Med. shame you don't have your own boat as I could come out and do it.

Eh, I thought you had to be uk citizen or resident in the uk to do the Rya day skipper even though we will be doing it in the med , my wife is neither?...I will go back and look again I might be getting my knickers in a twist over nothing then.

Tough job, but somebody ................. ;-)

Stating the obvious maybe, but could David not charter a small boat for a few days just for the course?

No, anybody from anywhere can do the RYA courses. I have run Day Skipper courses in the Gulf for Mauritians and Arabs. There is no exclusion as long as the centre you do the course through is an RYA recognised centre. It is the issue of ICC documents that have nationality implications.

That's how I interpret it , icc up to 24m, well I am working on the other bit that's also the reason to be in the med.

Thanks

As long as it is coded and meets certain minimum standards. But there are schools in the med.

There is a school called Palma Sea School run by a very experienced guy called John Hart. Www.palmaseaschool.com

I see their ICC course is E900/person. John is a senior examiner for the RYA and in fact was my instructor/examiner on my Yachtmaster Instructor course.

The name Palma Sea School will give you an idea of where it is!

What's the point icc is only 900 euros for the whole course including the boat hire, the other course charged 550 euro per day for boat hire plus the instructors fee , the icc is almost half the price and it's the icc license thats the required document in the med . I know that the day skipper is the more prestigious achievement but I can do that later when I have some skill and experience.

That's the place I emailed earlier today, still no reply yet

Who had you booked the DS

I was going to do it with a company in puerto pollensa , I have asked them for new pricing for doing icc course ,but they have not replied to my mail so thought I would look elsewhere , good job I did , it's my own fault for not shopping around and also not knowing what I really wanted.
