We've just bought a Rutland 913 and need a 3m s/s pole. Any suggestions for cheap east coast supplier? (Suffolk preferred)

Thanks.

Simon,

you can get a reasonably priced package from

http://www.picea-316.co.uk/PICEA/Tube.html for the steadying 25mm tubes and fittings.

The 75mm tube can be got from any local supplier, I got mine (which is only 50mm) from EJ Alloys in Southend.

I suggest getting the central pole (75mm?) and a clamp fitting that goes round it at the middle, with two steadying bars to go on existing pushpit, which picea supply fittings for.

This is how I mounted my 503.

The only bracket I had to make was the main tube to deck, which was just a pivot bracket really, with 4 holes through the deck. I had it made at work, so no cost, but it would be easy to make in a morning.

You know that Rutland will also sell you a mounting kit?

I have a mounting foot bracket spare as when i put mine on the supplied bracket was not suttable for my arrangement as full fish says a bracket with 4 holes with one hole as a pivot if it any use pm me

Stainless pole

Your local Pipeline Centre (part of the Wolsey Hughes group) can get most sizes within 24 hrs. Prices OK, eg 1" pipe is under £4.50 + vat per meter

When installing, try to isolate everything possible using neoprene and/or cork pads with rubber isolation grommets. This should minimise any noise that you may experience. An unfortunate side effect of many wind generators is that any noise at all is transmitted down the pole and the aft cabin/locker acts like a huge loudspeaker amplifying what is barely aurible above decks.

Is is easier to plan this isolation now, before installing, rather than after the event.

I was up at Marlec last week who did a great job in changing some noisy bearings on my 913. In their reception there was a marine pole which looked quite substantial - it came with deck pad and 2 solid stays which clamp to the pushpit and from memory seemed quite good value - especially compared to anything being custom designed.

I wish someone would design a simple adapter with built-in rubber isolation which could be a simple retrofit as it would have a similar mounting to the pole as per the existing generator and the socket/cup above to take the generator would be rubber lined with rubber isolated bolts to hold it in place.

Thanks for the tips. We used to have a 913 and the boat still has the fittings on the stern for the pole. The Marlec system is supplied in 1m sections and I would much prefer a continuous pole section.

0.5m on the transom for existing brackets (plum transom on the cat) and then the regulation 2.5m above deck.

Fred Dash General Dealer par excellence in Latchingdon has a good stock of secondhand SS tubing at proper prices.
Take a magnet with you to check its a reasonable grade.
