I need a distance measurement

What? I can't be doing with all that, especially after a few bottles of vino and too much sun. The whole point of Med cruising is that the navigation is 'what you see is what you hit'. Why do you have to use so many waypoints in Croatia, in particular?
Don't worry, the Croatian wine is nothing to call home about, so unless you'll bring some from Italy, you'll be fine! :D
Anyway yes, basically also in Croatia it's just a matter of "what you see is what you hit".
But as it happens, there's plenty of things to hit - about 1700 of them, as I recall. And the coast is also very irregular.
Just to give you an idea, I re-checked my route for the eastern coast of Istria (which is one of the easier coasts of the whole Country!): 18 wpts for 50 NM. Including a couple of VERY narrow channels between the coast and some small islands.
But you must try this area for some real fun. I could only cross the SW-NE passage while I had boats with outdrives, raising them up to the point that half of the props were spinning above the surface.

Yeah thanks, I think I'll give that particular channel a miss. Btw what charts and pilot book do you recommend for this area? I have bought some large scale Imray charts to cover the coastline down to Dubrovnik but the detail is too small for pilotage. I have also bought this pilot book http://www.imray.com/record.cfm?i_stock_code=IB0002 but again some of the plans for smaller harbours and anchorages look a bit lacking in detail

I always found (and so did most boaters I met around there) this one to be the best, in spite of a rather poor printing layout (all B&W, at least those days), and also some translation mistakes. If you get by with German, you might consider the original version.
For charting, I've used both C-map and Navionics and found both pretty reliable, so whatever you have onboard will be fine.
Though I must say that if I were still cruising that area, I'd give that Garmin thingie a serious thought.

Beautiful coastline !!!
Remember it very well, but our cruise came to an abrubt hault outside Zadar....
Fond memories of the friendliness of the locals (islanders and mailanders), stunning anchorages etc. An area not to bypass fast and please do make the sacrefice of taking longer time covering less distance each day. I promise you that you will not regret it and that all onboard will have a unique, memorable passage.
