I would like 12 links of giant chain for an exhibition. Anyone know where I can some from? The bigger and gnarlier and older and rustier it is the better! Links the size of dinner plates would be great, but any link size over about 6 inches will do the job.

Will pay for them, pick them up and/or cut them off a longer length myself to save you the hassle.

Thanks,

Foulkes' Chandlery Barge at Bursledon Bridge always has loads of fairly big old chain, anchors etc outside so there might be something suitable there.

Down here we buy secondhand ship's chain for our moorings in large sizes, by the metre from Macsalvors in Redruth, Cornwall www.macsalvors.com tel 01209 212125.

I have seen lots of rusty chain with links as big as a dinner plate there. they sell chain by the metre and describe it by the thickness of the steel bar forming the links, so you are talking about inch and three eigths, inch and a half , two inch.

Be prepared for the weight though, chain of this size is extremely heavy.

There may be a company up your way selling ex WD equipment, that would be a bit nearer to you than Cornwall. When we lived in the midlands (1970s), there was a place on the A38, at Alrewas, near Lichfield that sold ex WD equipment, they probably would have had chains (I didn't need to build up a mooring when I lived in the midlands, so didn't look)

You are talking 3" and each link is around 50 KG
as used on ofshore rigs....Lots in Aberdeen try Balmoral MArine and ask for mooring division....They would have uncertificated chain....Might even help in delivery as they run up and down to Great yarmouth

give them a call.
