the memories going I reckon.

There's a letter in Febs YM about warranties on marine stuff. The editors note was where my memory let me down.

" YM has never shirked from criticising shoddy products even if it means upsetting advertisers etc.etc.etc."

I was trying to think of an example of this forthright criticism. I remember Geoff Pack going after MDL but then it goes kind of grey.

Can anyone help me out?
 
Reckon I must be getting even older, then. My memory is when they said something rude about Moodys many years ago and lost the very lucrative full page inside front cover advert for a year or so. Bit hazy about what it was that they said, though.

Can\'t remember the detail, but..

There was a case a few years ago, when IPC were taken to the cleaners in court over an adverse review of a boat (no doubt others here will remember more than I).

Not sure if this is, in itself, dangerous territory to get into, but my perception of the case at the time was that, although the critcism was somewhat trenchant, it seemed to be fair comment and not inspired by malice. They were perhaps (allegedly, without prejudice etc.) unlucky in court on the day.

In consequence, I suspect that IPC are a bit cautious about this kind of thing unless there is very clear justification.
 
No, directional stability and rudder design (not construction) on the Moody 34 (alleged - subject to subsequent improvment, competence of testers, might have been a bit harsh at the time etc....no, dash it, the Moody 34 didn't steer very well - full stop.

Ah, that's why I saw one go into a frightfull broach on the Veerse Meer. We were 100m behind him, and we were racing a bit between the islands (you know: alone on the water=pleasant sailing, another boat on the water and it suddenly becomes a match race).

We both get gusted, my boat gently goes on his left ear, the Moody goes into a full fledged broach. And I had more sail up. Mind you, I have a semi-length keel, 1m70 deep.

But the look of panic on that guys face.

We did come in the lock first though. hah!

Hm, this is a bit telling - "EVEN if it means upsetting advertisers" implies that it is certainly a consideration. Whereas of course, in a perfect world the editorial team shouldn't have a clue who the advertisers are.

Since we aren't in a perfect world, and since the market is small with relatively small players, shoddy products get through without every single one of them getting a detailed biffing.
