Mooring up on Dale pontoon last weekend, for a pint of Cwrw Haf. Young fella, named Adam. He looked about 24. We got chatting and he showed me his boat, moored opposite Ishtar in this photo:

She's 17ft, a Silhouette he bought in Norfolk, called watermint (love that name) and evidently took part in the ill fated fastnet race in the '70s. He's rebuilt her and sailed her from Neyland to Lundy, and to Waterford.

I was impressed, and it's great to see a youngster taking on an old boat and continuing the true spirit of adventure.

Don't have a picture, but if you're reading this Adam, well done, mate!

Great

Saw a group of french youngsters on the same pontoon a couple of years ago who had sailed up from Brittany in some small French plywood boats about 18 ft. They were planning to Sail up to Scotland then back to brittany.none of them looked to be over 20 some a bit younger.

Good to see people making the most of what they have.

We often see him on the haven and always comment how pleasant it is to see such a young person into sailing.

I think he moors her off Neyland Yacht club?

Yes, that's him. And I agree, I was very pleased to see a youngster so passionate and, it seemed, experienced.

Had a coffee and a long chat with Adam again at the weekend. Seems he's well into restoring old boats and engines. He has a blog too, with lots of pictures.

He's really enthusiastic, and very positive about sailing. Lovely chap

Welcome to the Forum, Adam. What was wrong with your engine?

24! Call that young. I started restoring my first 30ft wooden cruiser when I was nineteen. Still at it 40 years on though!

Think i was 19 when i bought my first big boat. On to bigger and better now and now 36! Best way to learn. Looking for a 38 footer now.

Fastnet???

I'd just like to add (without taking anything away from Adam) that no Silhouette has taken part in a Fastnet race, let alone the ill-fated 1979 event. The RORC would never allow it.

However just recently a 15 year old lad (Oli Hancox) has sailed a Silhouette Mk2 from Plymouth to France to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of his father. Now that's what I call a "Real" achievement. Here's his website: http://www.channelchallenge.co.uk/index.htm

Jim.
