I like the way the RNLI think when they name their boats...

Hmm, on second thoughts, I'm beginning to smell the sort of craven funk in the bureaucratic minds of the politically "correct" (correct? CORRECT!!!! Ha! I jest!) RNLI at the thought of a rescue boat being publicly referred to as "Beer Festival THREE!!!!!" thus indicating the three times over unbridled generosity of the sons of John Barleycorn...our wonderful public.

God, I so hope I'm wrong on that dreadful thought...

Why on earth do they/would they not use the name of the vessel?? I'm a bit surprised that is even legal. Is it?

You've never heard a lifeboat on the VHF? They're always "Yarmouth Lifeboat", "Weymouth Lifeboat", etc, not "Humphry and Gladys Bonkers" or whatever benefactor the boat is actually named after.

Our local lifeboat is always known by its home station. Lifeboats along this coast are always refered to by their home port/station name. It makes sense as you generally need to know where it is coming from, etc. The actual name can cause confusion. I certainly dont know the name of Harwich or Southwold boat. Besides which they change them quite regularly. They are usually named after the main sponsor/benefactor? and can be quite a mouthful to keep repeating?

I think you're overthinking this. It's just that lots of their lifeboat names are long and complicated, based on who helped pay for them, or they have names that sound more like a twee displacement motor cruiser. If you're in trouble and you get a call from "Pride of Bogshire", your reaction is likely to be different to hearing "Bogtown Lifeboat" arriving on scene. Makes it much clearer what's going on.

In addition to that, lifeboats move around a bit. Perhaps not the RIBS and similar, but all-weather ones are moved for repairs and maintenance and a replacement goes on station. Far easier to remember where you are based than exactly which boat you are on.

I'm just surprised that MASH has apparently never overheard a lifeboat on the radio (or the Coastguard talking to one).

2nd coxwain of Lifeboat is the Landlord of my local (49 steps from the house) Have made a few joking blunders after a few beers. This guy, in his forties, studied all the RYA courses via internet and gained top score award for the country. You will never find a more dedicated bunch of people, inc 3 women.
Its worth having a word with. (Although they wont take my old flares, or let me set them off on the beach, etc.)
These guys will risk their lives at any time of day or night to get out (7 minutes from bed to launch) to get you out of a problem. Including the idiots who ignore changing sand banks, etc. Get to know your friends! They may save your life one day.
