Rather than buy hose pipe at €3 per metre from the closest stockist here in Beaulieu Sur Mer I wandered up to the closest supermarket where they often have some gardening stuff. Low and behold a hose for €9! What a bargain I was so happy until I plugged it in to fill my water tank and discovered that tuyau poreux is a porous hose for soaking lawns.

My wife joins me tomorrow and has just called me a goose. Fairly deserved I think. My water tank is filling very slowly.

Time for a beer.

Why check. Always assume. And besides if I am trying to save money on hose pipe do you think I would use my phone and pay roaming charges!

My wife is still laughing at me.

So you have already missed the opportunity to explain it is especially for washing down the deck?

Having only achieved 9 percent in my final french exam. I have now learnt most of my french from supermarket labels which has been much more successful than my comprehensive education:)
Unfortunately my conversational french is still not very good I yet to meet a Frenchman with a Glasgow accent

Watch out for 'faux amis' - those words that seem to mean nearly same, especially when the weather warms up - chaud is a dangerous friend....

My sister lives over there I have visited a couple of times. A whilst ago she told me how much my French had improved between visits.

In the next to shops showed her how it really had not.

First shop timid and quite French, bonjour questcevu.... French shop keeper enjoys watching me squirm. And I struggle along trying to buy what ever in French.

Second shop loud and confident, BonJour.. Cava (wait for answer, you will not understand but that is irelivant answer we, bon, or uncertain look). The jump in with questcavu? Say it in English or guess in French, does not matter. 9 times or off 10 the shop keepers English turns out to be far better than your French.

They are a funny breed seem to like having English shouted at them, bad French whispered at them but not really bad French shouted at them by some one who thinks they can speak the language.

One of my triumphs in France resulted in me trying to force a revolting-looking green liquid into a reluctant 9yr old daughter. My attempt to order limonade had resulted in "lait menthe"

I was not entered for my French O grade I was so bad!

My wife has a degree in French and speaks it really, really well. May years ago we arrived in a small hotel and the room was not up to standard. SWMBO stomped downstairs and a loud conversation with much arm waving that was heard by all and sundry. When she had finished she turned to me and said we needed to go out for an hour while they cleaned the room. On asking what she had said all I got in reply was, "a lot of French swear words that I surprised myself I could remember after all these years", on returning to the room it was spotless.

In France, I keep quiet and she does the talking.
