Now then,

I am getting 2 conflicting points of view as to which is best: should batteries be topped up all the time from shore power or should they be worked? We have 2x260 AGMs

No they should not be "worked" for the sake of it.
The more cycling, the shorter the life.
You may need a boost/equalisation charge from time to time, and if they have been really neglected a discharge or two to wake them up, but not routinely.
No manufacturer's instructions with them or on website?

Batteries have a limited life in terms of charge-discharge cycles, so the more you "work" them, the shorter their life. But there's no need to top them up continually on shorepower.
